badboyz31
Hey guys my name is Cameron, and this is my little track car project, I also own a z31 that a little modded and is pretty much going to be my DD stanced car with weekend track use. But this car is going to be a strict track car(autoX and road racing) that I can drive to and from the track, also I want the car to handle really great Mods or things I have so far: Tein coilovers, still need to buy pillow ball upper mounts and camber plates W-series vg30e fully rebuilt was previously in my z31 Holset HY35 Corbeau GT4 vintage bucket seat Momo Race wheel and hub 16 gallon fuel cell KA24 aluminum 2 core radiator(fits perfect in all z's s30-z31) Whole z31 efi harness with 84T ecu 16x8 diamond racing wheels meth injection kit s13 front suspension parts 38mm wastegate 50mm BOV Still need to buy: 255 fuel pumps lines and fittings cage possibly arita speed replica front or imsa front fiberglass hood eventually fiberglass doors lexan windows all around will eventually run haltech after i max out the stock ecu autometer gauges other misc small stuff here and there The stock 280zx tranny and z31 tranny's are the same just the bellhousing is different, so with the 280zx tranny mount on the z31 tranny it fits like a glove and only moved the engine and shifter location back about 1.5" to 2" make for as low and as far back as possible! ohh and the trans is a 71c not the t-5 A problem I did find though, is stock manifolds will not work unless you do some firewall modding with a BFH! Also stock intake will not work, but that can be remedied with a maxima front entry or s12 side entry intake flipped around! Another problem is this, but it's a pretty easy fix, the stock s130 mount location cannot be used though, as the alternator will be placed in the same location. I will take a L shaped piece of steel stock and mount to frame rail and build mount to mount to the stock z31 mount on the block Passenger side is near perfect, poly mounts will be replaced with a aluminum mount with the bottom shaved to a 45* angle to match the 280zx stock crossmember, and a 23* angle to match the stock z31 mount on block, at about a total of 3-4" tall or so. also the stock hood latch assembly.....well you can just take that off and throw it at the neighborhood kids! Not the final turbo location, was just mocking it up, I have to trim the stock MAF mount and modify it more and then I will use it as the brace for my turbo! This is where the shifter sits with the tranny moved back, shifter location moved by about 1", but still can shift into gears 2-4-R just fine! more pics and updates soon! BLOZ UP
These swaps seem to be getting more and more popular. You'll also have to modify or remove the heater pipes from the back of the intake and valley. I just had to cut and rotate them each about 30 degrees to fit against the firewall. I was able to fit the stock hood latch on the 280Z with a front entry intake (Maxima), but I can't say if the S130 is the same.

But after further inspection I'm pretty sure I could fit the stock latch will probably fit with the maxima intake, but I rather just use aerocatch hood pins anyways. but I have seen your car on z31p also, as my nuild thread is over there too, I will probably also be trying my hand for the first time at building a set of headers similar to yours! BLOZ UP
Meh, I guess the 280ZX is different, but I had problems with the heater pipes, both of them, when I installed the engine. Looks great. Look forward to seeing more.
badboyz31
Thanks man I will deff keep updates on the project! Also I have been wanting ask you does the tranny mount and stock driveshaft work in your setup?
BLOZ UP
I mounted the 5 speed 71C in place of the 4 speed 71b (280Z) transmission. Just swapped the isolator to the 280Z one and bolted it up. The transmissions almost identical, so the 280Z driveshaft just fit. The key factor being the length of the portion of the transmission from the mount to the end of the tail shaft was the same as the 71b. badboyz31
ahh ok, yea i was able the use the stock driveshaft and tranny mount from the 280zx and it fit like a glove, but I will be swapping the diff for a z31 unit I have and see if the z31 driveshaft will work in its place instead! BLOZ UP
I also have a CLSD from a Z31 that I'll put in eventually. I doubt the Z31 driveshaft will be anywhere near the right length. What should work is swapping the flange off of the Z31 differential with the S(1)30 one. You should be able to use the same S(1)30 driveshaft.
