Auto shifter with H-gate?

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to convert a 4-speed shifter to work with an automatic transmission? It would be really trick to use a chromed shifting gate in the shape of an "H"on a car with an Auto trans.

I think B&M had one, but it never got to market. So, while I'm waiting on parts to arrive, I thought I'd give it a go.

I won't say its not possible, but 4 speeds use two shift rods (actually three including reverse) and automatics only use one or a cable. For the 4 speed look, I'd just use one of the aftermarket B & M with the shift boot and T hurst handle it looks very much like a 4sp but has a fast shifting inline gates. But hey, nothings impossible if your willing to fabricate and engineer it. smile.gif Hows about 4 shift handles like a Lenco, that'd look trick too. (and it wouldn't be five feet long like a Lenco tranny) :D

Hurst makes a shifter called a dual gate that is a regular shifter on the right, and a detent stop inline shifter on the left. Not quite the Ferrari gate setup, but the closest off the shelf. Installed by the factory on Oldsmobiles Hurts/Olds that had auto trans.

My bad, didn't even think about the H-gate ferrari look you were trying to achieve. How about making the middle and 3-4 gate just fake? The shifter would just work on the far left gate but still give you that notchy ferrari gate?

That sounds cool! You could also put the PRNDO21 indicator along the other leg of the "H"... backlight it so it only shows up when the switch is on.....

Lokar makes some cable and / or rod shifters for automatix that look like sticks. Its a simple lever with one axis pivot - would be simple to fabricate from a few old 4 spd shiter parts.
