Hey Drax, 11s With a Low-budget L28T?

Recommended Posts

Wow, it all sounds good to me! I can't believe he ran 12.32 with the stock downpipe! I've shown that particular piece of Nissan engineering to a few friends and we're all pretty baffled how that got onto a high end sports car. (At least at the time)

My car will be losing its old engine in a weeks time, when I park it to start the real work. New engine will be built up to accept bolt-on upgrades, up to ~350hp. (the area when you start getting into forged pistons, etc)

Right off the start I will be hoping for mid 13's... With a fairly stock turbo engine. Totally OEM Nissan bottom end (though it will all be new), 2.5" downpipe, 2.5-3" exhaust, eclipse BOV, SDS, and likely a K&N filter setup. Also all emissions stuff is gonzo.

As you can see, I've left the doors open to bolting on things like a t3/t4, a good I/C, (boost will stay at 7psi until I/C comes, which will give me a nice break-in period) bigger injectors, etc.

It sure is encouraging to hear those numbers though... I hope I can find a track to run my car at when its rolling again...

Just thought I would give you a little encouragement.

My buddy here in Orlando has a 71 with an L28 turbo. The car ran 12.32@114 with a stock NA block, turbo head and manifolds, t3/t4 at 22psi!!, Spearco I/C, 420cc injectors, Jim Wolf setup, stock DP, 2.5" press-bent exhaust, open 3.54 and 225 street tires. He is finishing up a complete body restoration and swapped out the JWT for an SDS, added one of my DPs with 3" exhaust and 600cc injectors. Last week while testing, he started to blow a lot of oil smoke out the breather and lost compression in 2 cylinders. Thats a 100 passes with high boost on a junkyard NA block catching up with you.

Anyways, since the motor was shot, he decided to run it anyway on Wednesday. He crept of the line with a 2.25 60' but ran 12.84 @113.9 with 16psi boost. We just picked up a junkyard turbo block today and will do rings and bearings on it. With an LSD, tires, a healthy block and more SDS tuning, I fully expect high-11s at probably close to 118mph. Another example of what the right combination of components and proper tuning can do for you.

Drax,

I strongly recommend that while you are in the new block putting in new bearings, you should seriously consider getting some ARP or Nissan Comp rod and main bolts. Nissan Comp sells the bolts for $35 per set (If memory serves me correctly). Cheap insurance to do since you are there anyway!

Thanks Mike, thats actually something that I hadn't looked into to my satisfaction yet. I've seen mixed messages from people about using stock bolts, or not. I'll check into that when my engine starts being assembled again... Saving that for the rainy days though, since I have so much other stuff I can do to my car while the wether is nice outside! (Unfortunately I don't have a garage with enough room to dismantle a car in it)

Are ARP head bolts a must as well? Or just Nissan Turbo head bolts?

I used the New turbo bolts. I can't stress enough on using new bolts for the main, rod and head bolts. I had the only engine failure I have ever had in 15 years of building engines due to not checking a rod bolt for stretch...It failed and cost me the bottom end of an L28 motor...ON START UP!!!!

Seriously, for the added cost of about $100 for all the bolts you need, it is money well spent, especially with a turbo adding stress to those areas!

Just a thought!
