fl327
hey guyz and galz im selling my v8z and looking to get another really nice stock 240 from a friend in the coming weeks, or days if i could. im wondering what would be the best motorswap besides the v8, oh gosh i will miss monster torque madness. but iwant to go with a 6 cylinder turbo, im very ansy about going with the silvia swap four banger for one, and the other being an imported engine with limited support if something went wrong im thinking about a early turbo supra motor, heard that the supra tranny can be bolted up to the l24-8 with an special plate, i am wondering why not the motor as well grand national motor sounds awesome, and may be an option. guys out there with the l28, how do you like it and is the boost reliable and spool up quick enough for you, and does anyone out there know or have a toyota motor powered datsun, inquired fellow z head would love to know. thanx leonard fairlady turbo 6? John Scott
Leonard, I think any turbo 6 set up would be cool. Is supercharging (centrifugal) an option, or do you want to go more high tech? I'm sure you'll get some good feedback on this one. JS
Guest Anonymous
Stick with nissan! 280 turbo drivetrain will literally bolt directly in and give 250+ hp with nothing other than a boost controller and a good exhaust. The previous model supra engines have fatal head gasket problems(They blow gaskets and damage heads all the time) and any stock engine you buy will need major engine work unless someone has already spent a truckload of money to do it right. Or drop in a vg30t from a 84-89 300ZX. Lightest iron block v6 made, compact, dead reliable, dirt cheap, and makes great power. But whatever you do, stay well away from the mk3 supra turbo engine unless you want to spend a coupla grand just to build the engine to not blow head gaskets and warp heads. ------------------ Morgan morgan@z31.com http://carfiche.com http://z31.com
clint78z
The SR20DET is an awsome block with alot of HP cababilty, very sophisticated . For alot of people the 2.0l doesn't have enough low end . Rb26DETT is about $8000, in my opinion is one of the best engines in the world . The VG30DET is a much better engine than old supra engines . It has that nice blend of torque smoothness, and has good power potential . If you want more exotic go for the the VG30DETT, hard to fit and plumb but it will knock your socks off . John Scott
Kits? You're supposed to be a performance fabrication artist! Probably no kits, but with the expensive part of a Procharger, brakets and drives are just a trip to the machine shop away. Since everything is availible for them, a turbo, would be simpler with the Z engine, no doubt. JS
BLKMGK
Okay - silly question... What's wrong with the current car that couldn't be tamed down to make it into a more daily driver? IMO it would be cheaper to simply tame what you've got and not hassle with selling it and then buying another car - only to turn around and modify it too... Just a thought! Guest Anonymous
If you can get your hands on a 93+ Supra turbo motor, that would be a great choice. Also, the Getrag 6 speed that goes with it. They are by no means cheap, but you can make 400rwhp with stock turbos and 3" exhaust. Sky is the limit with bigger turbos. These blocks are built like a tank. When the time comes, I will use one of these on my 240 or the Q45 V8. -Andrew
Guest Anonymous
Another Supra Swap! I was looking to get a Mk IV Supra Engine, but I know that it will cost some serious bucks. I think that I may go for it, though. Or even with the Z31 mill. Oh, yeah-DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT PUTTING IN A Z32 ENGINE. That is far more costly and difficult than you can imagine.(Over $10,000) I was thinking about that swap, and I called a shop that had performed one, and the guy gave me the great news. Guest Anonymous
The 280zx turbo drivetrain will bolt directly into a 240 pretty much. I think you might need a custom driveshaft at worst. The v6 is far superior in everything - price, packaging, power potential, stock reliability, economy, drivability, etc, etc. but the v6 obviously is a much more difficult swap. The turbo on a v6 will hit the steering shaft, so you'll have to move either the steering shaft or the turbo. The v6 is also much lighter and the v6's CG can sit much farther rearwards than that of an l6. ------------------ Morgan morgan@z31.com http://carfiche.com http://z31.com
Guest Anonymous
If I can get the capital together for that undertaking, you can bet I will go for it. But a Mk IV Supra engine is about 3 Grand, plus thae trans., and the various other things needed for the Accessories and whatnot. If I get some REALLY good modeling jobs, money will be not a problem. But I am still not sure about a LOT of the details. But I'm also in no big hurry. BTW, I am also thinking about the VG30 swap (muuuuch cheaper, but not as badazz). Time will tell!
