Stock inline won't run!!

I know that my inline 6 isn't a hybrid, but I thought I would ask this question any way. What should I do to make my 1983 280ZX Turbo run after it has been sitting for 3 or so years? I have already drained the fuel and added new with injector cleaner, changed the spark plugs and wires, and put in a new battery. All it does is crank and crank and crank and it will sometimes start after like a minute of trying to start it. Then when it does start, it shoots lots of black crap out of the tail pipe onto the pavement. One of the few times I've gotten it to run, I drove it down the street and it performed pretty well, but then it died and wouldn;t restart about a block from my house and I had to push it home. frown.gif My dad thinks its the injectors, but we added injector cleaner to the fuel. Is it possible to clean the injectors by hand on this car? I have a repair manual and it shows how to remove them, but doesn't say anything about cleaning them. I would also appreciate any other helpful hints about how to make the car run again. Thanks!!

I had a similar problem on a friend's 4 Runner that sat for 2 years. I kept on telling him we needed to prime the injectors. But neither of us knew exactly how to do this. So, we just kept drinking more beer and taking turns - one guy spraying starter fluid (basically ether) into the intake and the other turning the key and pumping the accelerator.

 

Eventually it kicked over - many hours later. No, we didn't drive it that night.

Not sure about the Z efi,

but most domestic cars prime the fuel line for about 1 sec when the key is switched from OFF to IGN (ignition on).

 

You might want to try turning the ignition on for two seconds, then turning it off. Repeat this process... oh, about a hundred or so times. Next, find the schrader valve on the fuel rail (it looks like a valve stem on a tire). Press the center of the valve and see if gas shoots out. I realize this is not the safest technique eek.gif, but you will definetely know if there is pressurized gas or not.

Well I have some good news! I got it to start last night and ran it for about half an hour. It wouldn't idle so I kept it any where from 2200-3800 RPM the whole time. Then, it started to backfire and this caused my dad to come out side and he frantically told me to cut it. I asked why and he told me to look at the muffler. IT WAS GLOWING RED HOT!!! We were both freaking out over it since niether of us has heard anything like that ever happening. Now, I can't get it start any more. It just cranks and cranks and cranks. A couple of my friends thought it might be the coil, but we replaced it to no avail. frown.gif Anyone know if it bad for the exhaust pipe to glow red? Any other suggestions on what I should do? Thanks!

Talk about your hot cars eek.gif sounds like you have a lot of unburned fuel or late combustion exiting the engine. Check your timing for severely retarded. Also that your mechanical advance is working in the distributor. By 3000 rpm it should be fully advanced. I hope you keep some marshmallows and good fire extiguisher handy.
