Moridin
Have any of you or know of anyone that has done the V6TT swap and how it went? Thanks
Guest Anonymous
yeah, i knew a guy that tried this swap. i asked him about it, and it costs a lot of money to do. he said 15k, but i dont know why the heck it would be that much. however, his car is badass 8) (i think he might have ordered all new parts for it) all i need is the NA motor and thats enough for me. im not into the whole drag racing scene hehe 8) but here are some quotes: "The TT swap works great!!! It is expensive though...If I knew I was going to spend so much money I probably wouldn't have done it." "by the time all was said and done I probably have 15000.00 in the swap doing all the work myself." the guy si nice, here is his email : zwiz@flashcom.net
BLKMGK
$15K huh. Hrm, I'll bet that when I'm all said and done I'll be coming uncomfortably close to that number with the V8 (sigh).
Guest Anonymous
why? all i want to do is change the 2 engines and stuff to make them run. how do you get up to 15k for a swap? suspension, what else?
Drax240z
Heh, you'd be surprised where the money goes!! Just my engine alone... (and this has been a low budget job from the start) Rings, bearings, gaskets - $400 Timing Chain Kit - $143 Junkyard Engine - $342 Headword - $463 Rebuild work - $300 SDS system - $1373 CFDF clutch, MSD 6A - $768 240mm FLywheel + surfacing - $120 240sx TB/TPS - $100 Izusu NPR Intercooler - $278 ---------------- I can't even guess how many $5-$20 bills that should be mixed in there as well. There is over $4K JUST on my engine. And remeber, I'm being CHHEEEEEEEEAAAP!!! (whenever its possible, or makes sense) These are prices in Canadian $$$ btw. To convert to american $, divide by 10000. ------------------ Richard Lewis - 1972 240z, Powered by a Nissan 2.8L Turbo Inline 6. Guest Anonymous
yeah all i want to do is engine swap. but 4 k is a loot different then 15 k, hehe.
Drax240z
Ah but 15k would be sooooo easy! Forged Pistons - $900 Spearco/cartech I/c - $800 Big Ball bearing turbo -$1200 External wastegate - $300 GreEdy BOV - $30,000,000. (ok, about $200) Turbo Header - $1800 Turbo Timer - $200 550cc injectors - $350 SDS EM-6F instead of E - Extra $500 Scotties Downpipe - $150 Get the picture? All these would be in addition to what I had in the other post... upgrades I will do eventually. (well, most of them) I haven't even touched anything BUT the engine either. This engine in an early Z with no other upgrades would be downright SCARY! ------------------ Richard Lewis - 1972 240z, Powered by a Nissan 2.8L Turbo Inline 6. Moridin
I found some guy selling the TT motor for 2000 and it had under 50K miles on it. The NA motor was 1500 and it also had under 50K miles on it. I'm basically down to a Chevy 350, Ford 5.0 (302 EFI), Ford 4.6L DOHC, or VG30DETT. They all can be very fast, very fun, and/ or very expensive. For the 4.6L or Z32 motor, it will have to come out of a wrecked car that I can get for cheap. Thanks again guys, moridin2004
Scottie-GNZ
If you have fabrication skills, that swap will not cost you $15K. I spoke with one of the guys who did that swap (not Greg, I heard he is OK) and the guy was a pompous ass and basically gloated about the car and told me if I did not have a big wad of cash do not even speak to him about the swap. What he is not telling everyone is that includes EVERYTHING including body/paint. Just because the engine is $2K, does not mean it will be cheap. I took a long hard look at this swap and decided it was too expensive and complex. The $2K, I assume includes a tranny/flywheel/clutch, if not factor that in. You also need to consider the following: - fabbing the mounts - custom driveshaft - custom radiator and external oil cooler - ECM/harness and wiring up that puppy - I/C and plumbing!!! Remember TT means 2 and a plumbing nightmare. I was going to have Corky Bell make me an I/C for this with daul inlets and single outlet. With the mandrel plumbing and hoses, my estimate was $1100. - 2 DPs and exhaust - If you do not have fabrication/welding skills, then expect to pay someone a ton. IMO, a built L28T can match a lightly tweaked TT in cost and performance, but if you have the $$$ to put into squeezing HP from the TT is is tops. That is why I went with the GN. ------------------ Scottie 71 240GN-Z Scottie's GNZ
Dan Juday
I used to laugh at this, so called, rule of thumb. "Before you start the project figure the absolute most it should cost and double it". I'm now living it. This is why so many projects never get finished. "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him..." BLKMGK
Drax - for some of those parts you listed you can do VERY well buying used. The BOV for instance can be had pretty easily through the Supra, RX7, or maybe even the Mitsu forums. I've got a Greddy BOV on the RX7 and picked it up cheap by simply watching the RX7 forums for a deal. Same with the electronic boost controllers and all sorts fo toys. Lemme' know if you need URLs. E-Bay is also awesome but know what it's worth efore you consider bidding on anything. I've bought and sold maybe $6K worth of stuff this year and not been burned. Guest Anonymous
ok, so if i find a wrecked tt. (300zx, z32) why cant i just shove everythign in that into my car? can ti use same driveshaft and mounts and stuff? theres more room in the 240 engine bay then the 300zx i think. so i coudlnt use the stock IC then? all i want is a stock twinturbo engine in my 240, hehe. it will be fast enough. either that (if the tt is too much) or an NA engine. i mean 225 hp is still a lot (shut up v8'ers 8) ) in such a light car. right? and i can always upgrade that like pulleys, and whatnot. well does that work then? just using every engine part in a 300zx and putting it all into my car...woudlnt there by no custom fabrications then? thanks, mike
Moridin
I want the V-6 because it is quieter and more of a sleeper. Once you get on it you'll here the turbos spool up and realize what your up against. I think it's about 310HP in TT form. It's either that or a quiet 302. Guest Anonymous
I HAVE DONE THE VG30T SWAP. IT IS WORTH IT IN BEING SMOOTH-FUEL MPG AVERAGE 24-RWHP 370-TORQUE 470 ON DYNO. IT IS A REAL SLEEPER. COST IS NOT CHEAP DEPENDING ON THE MODS YOU WANT TO DO TO THE ENG. HAVE RUN 12.2 AT 116 ON STREET TIRES. CAR IS SETUP FOR ROAD TRACKS. WILL BE AT STANFORD NISSAN IN PALO ALTO FOR CAR SHOW ON APRIL 8. I HAVE 40,000 MILES ON SWAP WITH NO PROBLEMS.
240Z Turbo
with that kind of power you should be running faster than that. My old setup on street tires with an open rear ran 12.2 but at 121mph and we figured 365RWHP.
