heinekenns
Alright, I'm just trying to expand my knowledge of sport car engines. I've been reading on the mazda rotary engines and wanted to know the answers to some basic questions. I figured I should put this question here since I figure the 13B makes about as much power as a 6cyl. Here goes 1) how much HP can you make with these engines 2) how much do these engines cost if you were going to swap one 3)are they durable under sustaned high HP loads (ie. road racing) 4) with their simple design, wouldn't it be cheaper to make higher HP (and more reliably). I've been reading online (RX7club.com rotarypower.com RX7forum.com etc) for several hours now and haven't found a site/forum post that answers these questions. Many of the forums I've tried are 502 (too many people logged one) or are 404. Any and all help appreciated
BLKMGK
How much power? Turbo examples can mke as much as 500 and maybe more. Naturally aspirated I really am not sure. Cost I'm also not sure of but 3rd GEN RX7 motors like I've got new in the crate go for around $3K I think - sans turbos etc. That's the only copst yardstick that I happen to know. Durable? So long as you do NOT overheat them or encounter detonation they live fine although I'm npot sure a 500 horse example would Generally I think of them as somewhat frail since detonation kills them so easily - run them rich or pay a price! Cheaper? I dunno' about that. Realize that while they may make big HP they also make little torque. When I get in my RX7 after driving the Z it feels like the clutch is slipping madly because the revs climb and I don't feel like I'm moving much - till I look at the speedo! I can't say they'd make a good or bad swap candidate. I won one but am honestly afraid I'll toast it if I'm not careful. The V8 I'm not so worried about
stony
i had a 13bt in my 89 FC and had it at 350 rwhp with a 60-1 turbo. remapped computer, FMIC and a couple of additional injectors. it lived for a long time in fact i never killed it i sold the car. this motor was a pro rebuild and ran very good. you can hear a wav of it on my home page. as for swapping it into a Z. If you want good power and realiability id go with a 20b turbo. they make much better power and can easily put out 500+ hp and be relatively reliable. there is another post on here somewhere about this same subject.
