Guest Anonymous
I need help. I stopped by the junkyard today to get a head to replace the cracked one in my L24 with one from a maxima. I got everything disconnected except the camshaft gear. I can't figure out how to brace it so I can remove the big bolt on the end. The bolt is tightened super tight, and I only have one big breaker bar for the crankshaft pulley. How do I keep the camshaft from turning so I can remove this bolt? I tried all day today, and nothing worked. I wish I could use an impact wrench on it, but they won't let air tools in the junkyard. I'm heading back tomorrow(sunday) to try again, so any suggestions would be great. Thanks Rob
jeromio
Worst case: use a hacksaw to cut the timing chain. That way you can at least get the head back home.
GrayZee
you should see some (squared off) notches on the camshaft, put a big pair of vise grips there and stuff a rag between the vise grip and the head/valve cover gasket surface. Then turn the cam till the grips are up tight against the head and then loosen the bolt.
Guest scca
just put a BIG crescent wrench on a lobe and let it hit the head to stop the cam from turning

DAW
I missed you, but think impact, inertia of rest. Put a 19mm or 3/4" boxend wrench on the cam bolt and whack it with a hammer. That will do it, not pulling on it. Don't forget to remove the 10mm head bolts (2) at the front of the head.
Cruez
Jamb a piece of angled wood between the chain and shove it hard....it will keep the chain from moving. Then unbolt it....
