Guest Anonymous
Just obtained a lot of new hardware. I've got a 280z L6, with a Crane Camshaft in box. Do I need to buy new rocker arms, springs, lifters etc? The engine is a virgin crate (30K on it). Also, what is proper break in schedule/procedure? Appreciate any help. Guest Fast Frog
With the L28 series overhead cam, there are no lifters. Replace springs only if you know or suspect that one or more are weak and fatigued. DO replace the rocker arms!! The wear pattern from your old cam will be different from the wear made by a new cam. You may also have to change to a taller lash pad depending upon the new cam's increase in lift.
240Z Turbo
If everything is in order with rockers and geometry then you will want to fast idle(3K-3.5K) the car for 15-20min. This keeps the oil pressure up and assures that the cam breaks in correctly. After this initial 20min break in you should be ready to go. However, being a new motor make sure to use a 10W-30 or straight 30W oil for the motor break in atleast the 1st 500miles.
Lockjaw
You need to get some camshaft lube for the cam too. Crower recommends their lube plus some GM lubricant that costs about 12 bucks, and idle over 2000 rpms for 20 minutes. Straight 30 wt oil too. Liberally coat the lobes of the cam and the pads on the rocker arms. Then dump the GM stuff over the top of it all. You should also replace the rocker arms. Crower says the first 20 minutes of operation on a new camshaft determine whether or not you wear out a lobe, and if you do it wrong, you cannot fix it. If your crane cam has less than .460 lift, you can use your stock springs, but the stock retainers will will only hold up to a .160 lash pad. Stock is .120. So depending on what you need lash pad wise, you may not have to change anything but the lash pads themselves. The cheapest place I have found lash pads is here http://nismoparts.safeshopper.com/35/cat35.htm?482 They also have retainers, but you can get springs and retainers together from MSA cheaper.
