Introduction

I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone, and let you all know you have a new, enthusiastic member. I have been reading the HybridZ board occasionally for about a year now, and have been impressed with the resources and info made available by all of the generous enthusiasts.

I had a '78 280Z that I bought used and drove for a couple of years during college. I loved the car, but didn't have the cash for much more that basic maintenance. For the past year or so I have kept my eyes peeled for a 240Z, with the intention of eventually doing a V8 conversion. The sixes are great engines, but a V8 makes for one hell of a car.

Recently, I got lucky enough to find a decent 240Z with the V8 swap already done. I'm currently in the process of buying the car, and actually haven't seen it in person yet. Assuming all goes well, I will actually end up with the car and my introduction won't be pre-mature. I strive to avoid pre-maturity on all levels, and hope that I won't fail on this one.

As my "Public Name" implies, I enjoy the 'wolf in a sheep's clothing' approach, and my goals are to build a great all around street car- and surprise a few Boston area BMW, Audi, and Porsche drivers. There are quite a few M3's, S4's, 911's (with the occasional turbo) out there, and a few of them are begging to be humbled.

I'll probably limit the exterior mods to an air dam, some de-badging and trim removal, 16x7" Panasport alloy's, lowered suspension, and the REAL 3" exhaust pipe hiding under the rear bumper. I suppose they might be able to see the roll bar/cage through the back window.

The suspension will be fully rebuilt and modified, along with the brakes and driveline. I'm assuming that the rubber that I can fit on a 16x7" wheel will be the ultimate limitation to the car's performance. But, that's part of my plan to have a car with limits that aren't so high they can't be reached on the street (at least with my driving habits). So, I'm considering 215/55R16's all around, and debating about using 225's on the rear, or going down to a 50 series tire. The roads where I live are not the best though. I would be interested to hear people's opinion on that, as well as anything else I have mentioned.

I'm sorry for being long-winded. It might not happen again. I just wanted to offer my introduction and view to the group. Also, it's a relief to be able to blow the proverbial load of Z car talk to people that are actually interested- your mom will only listen to you for so long...

Welcome to the forum, Jon! icon_smile.gif

Pretty good story; I knew there were guys lurking about (and still are) gathering info and so on. Glad you found a car that has already been converted. As you know, many times that is half the battle won--the other half is getting the car set up the way YOU want it! Good luck with your purchase and I hope you get what you want!

Just don't make this post your last! icon_smile.gif

Howdy, Jon!

It sounds like you're trying to accomplish the same thing I am in your car - making it a street sleeper that won't scare off the prey! icon_biggrin.gif

Good luck, and please keep us updated on your car, and send pictures when you get it!

Ditto - Welcome to you and all the lurkers! Nothing wrong with lurking IMO, but please don't be shy about asking questions, we're here to help!

I tried the sleeper thing, as I love the stock Z lines and got the WIDEST 17" wheels and tires possible under the stock fenders and without tubbing, etc. (just coilovers). But the first time I started the 327 with the mild cam and 2.5" duals, there was no mistaking my car as a mild L6 engined stocker! Now with the bigger cam, I suppose sleeper will only apply to looks (except for the two Turbo mufflers hanging out back).

Welcome again!

The guys that want to take a shot racing ya can't hear over they're own Fart-canister exhaust anyway, and even if they do, they don't seem to relate that it might be a fast car anyway. As my new friend said to me just yesterday, these guys aren't worth the gas to race usually.... icon_biggrin.gif

Nah, it's just a big heavy slow slug V8 right? icon_biggrin.gif

I had hoped my car would be quieter, and it will be, but so far only a motorcycle has raced me. He lost! Most folks figure out it's not stock and back off, it's a real bummer. Soon as my headers come back I'm quieting it down a bunch....
