Guest Anonymous Posted May 16, 2000 Share Posted May 16, 2000 Hello, I just recently looked at a 1973 240Z. The car was running before it was parked and it sat for a year. Now the carbs seem to be stuck open and the car won't start. It will fire if you squirt carb cleaner down the carbs. The car has some surface rust. It is running the dual HU carbs I believe. Both floor pans are rusted away but, the top part of the pan and the trunk and behind the seats looks like new. The frame didn't seem to have any rust on it other than surface rust. The metal under the battery seamed to be just surface rust and the metal seemed to be strong. The dash had cracks on it but all the gauges looked good. The bumpers didn't look to be in too bad of shape. The car was in primer and the LH front fender was fiberglass. The car seams to have been drained of all its fluid before it was parked. It also has Air Conditioning. I was wondering if you guys think $700 is a good deal for this car. I plan on using it for some track racing not a complete restore. Please tell me what you think. Seriously, I'd be really really damn sure that it is only surface rust... For comparison I payed $1000 for my 73 240z not running... it had: New paint, new tie rod ends, new exhaust, new toyo tires, MSA airdam, rear spoiler, new floorboards... It was missing some stuff (bumpers, carpet, door seals) but fairly complete. I may or may not have gotten a great deal, but there is some comparison for you. The exhaust has no signs of rust. The entire underside did not have any rust that I could see. There was also no parts that looked to have been covered with undercoating. When I have a garage full of cars, thats when someone comes by and says "Gee you can have this one if you can tow it".... If it suits your build needs and you can't get a better deal elsewhere, try to haggle a bit without insulting the guy and then make your decision to purchase. Guest Anonymous Posted May 18, 2000 Share Posted May 18, 2000 I paid 500.00 for my 74 260, and it sounds like it is about the same, except mine ran, pretty good when I got it. Rust is very deceptive, dont just look ,, beat on the frame rails with a hammer and chisel or something pointed. If you can find a car with no rust, it would be worth the wait. The parts car was relatively rust free, 2.8L, 5sp, dents and dings on the outside and the interior needed some help. But all the guages were there and working. The 5sp was in good shape - only needed the bushings. It was registered and I was even able to drive it to get it inspected at my local Z shop. Total, I drove away with the car for $200. Guest Anonymous Posted May 19, 2000 Share Posted May 19, 2000 Well, I bought the car. After further inspection I found that both floor pans needed replacement. The worst part of the car was the battery stand and underneath the battery. The fender underneath the stand was rusted away but the local Z shop let me take out the fender and battery stand of a parts car for free. Other than that the whole car is solid. Glass is perfect. Fenders and panels are all good. I ended up getting it for $650 plus he is throwing in a 3 additional differentials, odds-n-ends like window cranks, shift levers, extra bumper, pair of headlight buckets, original seats and 2 extra sets of wheels and tires. So I think I faired pretty good. Not to mention that it's a complete car except that it is not running. I also picked me up a 1982 280ZX non-turbo today for $375 that runs and is drivable which I am going to use as a parts car for it's 2.8L engine, 5-speed, 3.90 differential and other stuff. Drax240z Posted May 19, 2000 Share Posted May 19, 2000 Yeah sounds like you did well. Maybe not a steal on the 240z, still decent, but $375 for a running 280zx isn't bad at all. You certainly would pay more for an L28/R200/5spd if you bought them seperately.
