Guest smoov280zx
I'd like some thoughts on this. Maxima n47 on a f54 flattop. with the stock head gasket, 1.2mm, i get 10.875:1 compression. With an adjustable fpr and a .450, 274/284 crane cam, is this ok to run on 92-93 without pinging? I'm hoping so since the chamber is the squish type of the p-series which is supposed to be able to run higher compression, and the valves are 280 valves. This is going to happen within the next month, so any feedback would be helpful. Thanks for any input. Mitch
yo2001
you'll need a bigger cam I would think.
DAW
I think you may be able to do it if you richen it up a little and not go over 12 degrees BTDC on initial timing. DAW
Mudge
Pinging is all going to be your timing work, the only thing is eventually the cam gets so big, or the head velocity is so poor at low RPMs that with lower octane your limited in the power you can make with your advance curve without ping. I could have made more low end power with my setup on the Camaro, but with 91 octane I was limited, so its a series of factors.
Dan Baldwin
If you find you have to retard the timing to avoid pinging, you could try the 2mm head gasket with one of the .020" layers removed (for a 1.5mm gasket) to get you to ~10.5:1 by my reckoning, which should be better-suited to running on pump gas.
