Guest Anonymous
I had kinda decided on putting a 302 in my 240, but I can get a 280Z('78, I think) for little $$$. What kind of power would I be looking at if I used the 280 motor w/my SU carbs, a hedder, & cam?
Guest Anonymous
About the same.. You may be better off to run the fuel injection
Synlubes
Bones, What kind of power would I be looking at if I used the 280 motor w/my SU carbs, a hedder, & cam? A 280 block bored .040 with flat tops and say an N-42 head along with your carbs, cam and header would make for a very nice running fun car. Don`t know what HP rating you would end up with. Guest 240hybrid
When I had my 75 280z with FI, Intake, Big throat throttle body, headers, exhaust, 13lb flywheel, and Centerforce clutch, I was able to be a old V8 GTO and that was after I chased him out of a gas station and he had a 1 and 1/2 to 2 car lead on me. I passed him by the time I was about to shift to 4th. I was going to install a cam in it but never got to it. Girl hit that car, but I pulled the motor and plan to install cam and put into a 240 once Im completely done with my 280zxt 240 project Im doing now. You can get some good power out of a FI L6. Cam it and find out if someone could reprogram the ECU and a few other simple mods you'll be getting up there. Theres been some post on strokers makin good power and have dyno charts to show. Good luck on your decision. Chase
katman
Stock L28 with SU's say 170 hp. Commercially available cam with no additional compression or headwork- maybe 12 hp. Header and 2.5 exhaust, maybe another 8. Call it 190 for the state of tune that most street cars are in. Well short of a 302, but still lots of fun. Mudge
Thats not 170 real horsepower either, bank on 150 HP at the crank, not 170 HP in a controlled test environment with nothing hooked up. Plus those are low compression pistons, not exactly NA friendly. The guy that pulled the F54 that I bought from him, got it for $90, with flat tops, for the whole shortblock minus a flywheel and head so if I were you I'd go that route and build it up right. Or, a 302 is going to have more torque and about 225HP in stock form (not counting headers), and NOT be peaky either. But of course its not a straight plug in and yada yada, but I'm starting to think of a mild V8 instead of the F54, but I have time to think about it of course.
