How much HP for me?

I am going to replace the cam in my 351W with a milder cam. I was wondering if someone with the desktop dyno ability could give me a ball park hp for my engine. The engine is a 357cid ford.

specs:

4.030 bore

stock length Eagle rods

stock cast steel crank

DSS forged flat top pistons(two deep ;) valve releifs)

Edelbrock Victor Jr. heads

320/245 cfm intake/exhaust @28h2o at .600 lift, ported by Fox Lake

60cc combustion chambers/ yeilds @11.1 compression with flat top piston

Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake, ported to match heads

New cam: Comp cams XR286R extreme energy mechanical roller cam

286/292 dur. intake/exhaust

.614/.621 lift intake/exhaust

1.6 ratio Comp roller rockers

Holley 950HP carb.

If you need further specs, please let me know. This engine is a hot street engine, limited street use. NOT intended to be driven daily or get good fuel economy. This thing is going in front of a Tremec 5spd, so a high stall converter is not needed. The old cam has over .700 lift and tons of duration(but also a solid roller). I feel like I can get better response and lower RPM power with the new cam... Also, assuming traction, what ET and MPH would you give this engine/trans(trust me, I can shift it) in a 2200lb car/driver. Oh yeah, the intake is plumbed with a Pro Shot Fogger, we don't need to count that though ;)

If I did it remotely close/correct your engine w/the new cam should be in the 470-503HP range in the 5500rpm to 7000rpm range and maximum torque entering the picture at 5500rpms at 450ft.lbs.

This is/was w/your new choice of camshaft-not the old cam and using Dyno 2000.

I didnt use the airflow file as I dont have those numbers but in the Cyl.Head selection I chose "Wedge/Fully Ported Large Valves & the size of the valves were In:2.02 Ex:1.65.

I also chose Small Tube Headers....didnt know what your exhaust system was/so that should get you in the ballpark.

Thanks Kevin,

The engine originaly used 1 7/8" primary, 3 1/2" collectors header. My brother sold the headers when he decided to build a Cobra replica, so I will need to fab some with correct tube sizes and length. Also, the heads have 2.05"-1.60" valves, and have been severely ported by Fox Lake. On the motor this engine made well over 500hp at the wheels with the old cam. I suspect the power figures to be lower than previous, but still respectfull.

WOW! Either way (it's probably in between these results) that puppy is going to ROCK! 2thumbs.gif

  • 2 weeks later...

Can someone please give me an estimated hp, trq. on Gabe's motor please?

383 sbc,9.0 - 1 Holley 650 DP, Edelbrock RPM Performer intake mani, hyd cam and lifters: int dur. 274, int lift .487; exh dur 286, exh lift .490 lobe 110 valves 2.02 and 1.6.

Block huggers dual 2.5" to an X pipe to a 3.5 " flowmaster 2 chamber. Yes it is very healthy sounding.

Any changes or suggestions for different setups are very much appreciated. Please give us your opinions. Just want Gabe's Z with decent power and streetable.

Also installing one power adder; NOS! later down the road.

James and Gabe,

I think that this post is just going to get lost here. Post a new topic in the Chevy section, maybe calling GrumpyVette, he seems happy to run these figures for us and his 'hybrid' software application seems pretty accurate.
