Klmykvl
Hey all, Just wondering if it would be safe to use a 1/8 watt 1k resistor as opposed to a 1/4 watt as a pullup from my distributor on my l28et. I have a 1/8 watt handy, if not I'll be heading to the store tomorrow. Just curious. I found this suggestion on diyautotune.com http://www.diyautotune.com/jwplayer_viral/images/cartech_articles/280zx/280zxt_v3_igbt_wiring.jpg
winstonusmc
I used a 1/8 watt. A pull up resistor doesn't use much power. I have using my setup for about 5 years now.
Klmykvl
Thanks for you input. Saves me a trip to the electronics store.
Namor
The reason a 1/4 watt is recommended is because a 1k resistor with 14 volts applied will flow .014 amps, which is equal to .196 Watts or about 1.5x what an 1/8 watt is designed to handle. The 1/8 watt will certainly work short term, but keep in mind that you will be overheating it. Personally, I would swap it out just to prevent any issues in the future. winstonusmc
But the internal resistance of the Megasquirt will limit the current. The pull up is there to make the controller see a high. That pull up should never actually short to ground. I used 5v for my pull up though.
Matt Cramer
Actually, the distributor's optical sensor will short the resistor to ground. I'd use 1/4 watt for reliability.
