Guest Anonymous
I'm in one hell of a mess. My stock 240Z gastank is leaking, and i need to put a new one in. The only thing is, for how my car eats gas, the stock capacity isn't nearly enough. How big of a gas tank could i fit in this car? that is, with removing the spare-tire well... Thanks for the replies.
Mikelly
I've just finished installation of a 22 gallon unit from Summit Racing. It is designed just like a fuel safe cell, with an internal blatter and an outter "Safe"... BLKMGK
go with what Mike did!I went with one of the Triangle aluminum cells and it's only 12gallons. I'd much prefer what Mike has and may switch later on down the road. The fact that it's got a steel safe is a BIG plus in an accident. You'll have to cut out the spare tire well to have it mounted though...

Drax240z
Mike what brand of cell is it? I was looking through my summit catalogue... is it the ones made by summit themselves? The red ones? Mikelly
I used the Sumit ProSport (Yes it is red) part number 290-113. I also recommend getting the 45 degree JFZ filler neck adapter. I'm really remiss in doing the tech article for this... I promised it to SportZ, so it won't be made "Public" here, but I can send some digital pics off line. I also modified the licenseplate holder to hide the filler and external vent behind the plate. Also, this unit was designed for circle track racing, but I relocated the pickup to the center of the unit in about two minutes... No biggie.. It comes with a filler roll over flap and a vent roll over valve already installed... VERY NICE UNIT... I believe JFZ makes and sells this unit at twice the cost, but distributes it to Summit without any markings so Summit can sell it for MUCH less! Guest RyalC
Mike - I would be very interested in seeing any "early" versions of your write-up. I have been following your progress on the fuel cell in hopes that I can avoid a few of the pitfalls I usually encounter when I go off on my own. I like your approach to the filler going out the back. I remember my old 72 Z28 Camaro with that setup I don't know if I'll go that way, keep the original fuel door, or put a custom "cap" on the side but I won't leave the filler in the car . How did you end up mounting the cell? I think I remember you were welding up some tubing to hold it but I can't tell from the photos on your "progress" web site how you actually attached the cell to the car. I'm also REAL interested in your modifications to the cell for the pickup. I am running an LT1 (fuel injected) and want to both relocate the pickup AND add a fuel return line to the cell. Do you see any problem with this? Is it that easy to "poke a hole" through the cell that will stay sealed? Anyway - as I understand the Summit literature the ProSport fuel cell is "seamless polyethylene construction for outstanding impact resistance, aviation foam filling to prevent slosh and aeration". This won't pass SCCA regulations because it isn't really a bladder (like ATL or FuelSafe) but I'm not running SCCA and with the metal can it sounds pretty safe to me. Thanks! BLKMGK
I'll be interested to know how the rear filler comes out. I've got a 45degree fitting for mine but the chassis guys said the angle was too shallow. I might try this later but for now I'll fill through the hatch (shrug) If anyone decides to do this check out the license plate holder for the Impalla SS - flips down nicely
Mikelly
Ryal C. I just used the holes for the vent and the pickup, keeping the vent, and using the pickup hole for the return. I then drilled a hole in the center, just behind the filler neck for the pickup to sit. I removed all the hardware for the "Bail" since I was replacing it with a filler neck and I removed the blatter from the safe. I laid a three strip wide section of duct tape under the area I was drilling into the plastic with and I drilled the hole for the right size of the pickup.. The tape caught any plastic droppings from the drilling... It was that simple. The unit comes with a bunch of 5/16 holes drilled around the unit, I believe there are like 48 mounting holes...what I did was weld in a frame of channel around the area, creating a very SNUGG fit for the cell, then drilled the holes through the 1/8 inch channel, using the safe as the template, then I painted the frame and sealed it with body sealer, and placed the safe in, then the bladder with the new 45degree filler installed, the lid and I was done... The rear access filler, I cut out the area behind the license plate panle and welded in a new sectuion of 20gage steel with the filler hole cut in.. I then installed the filler and primed and painted the new metal... It still needs to be re-painted as the paint ran a bit... however, this unit will be hidden behind the license plate, so I wasn't as clean with it as I could have been..
