Guest Anonymous
I've got and msd ignition box that is going on my Z soon. Just wondering where I'm going to put it. Any suggestions? I've seen several located where the battery was but I am keeping the battery in the stock location. Thanks, Mark
BLKMGK
Try to keep it away from heat - especially if it's one of the big clunky analog units! You could mount it in the glovebox, you could mount it up front by the radiator, you could try mounting over my the clutch master. Maybe the firewall? I wouldn't mount it on the strut tower as it'll get heat from the headers. Do use th eshock mounts if you can but watch them for rubber deterioration if it's supported by them - i.e. hanging by them or on a vertical surface. Hrm, you could even mount it behind the front wheel in the wheel well but shield it well from both debris and water as best you can. I've mounted units in areas like that and had trouble with water hitting some of the connections I didn't use - a condom or silicone can fix that Wherever you mount it I'd suggest labeling things and if possible having an easy way to revert back "stock". Having been left on the side of the road at 3am on a bitter cold night in the middle of nowhere I can appreciate the importance of this. I was able to revert to stock and get going in about 20minutes (it was REALLY cold) when my MSD 6AL died on me for no apparent reason. I also had to do this once before when I hit a big puddle, soaked th ebox, and was left dead in rush hour traffic. Switching the wires then was VERY fast and before the cop who pulled up could suggest a wrecker I was on my way. He was quite shocked Anyway, it's a good idea if possible. Drax240z
Take off your windshield cowling, and take a look underneath. I know a guy who put his in there, totally stealth. I wish I had seen that before I put mine in, because I would have copied him. I put mine next to the alternator on the L6, on the inner fender. (about 1/4" away from the lower rad hose)
Guest rooh
mounted mine under the inspection pannel(drives side) next to the washer bottle. If you LOOK you can see it.
Mike C
Try and mount it where you don't have to lengthen the wires. And like said above, away from heat. I can't say enough about making sure you have a good ground. That is probably the #1 killer of MSD boxes. Try and ground straight to engine block if at all possible. Guest dankinzle
I put mine behind the passenger's seat...within easy reach if I wanna pop another pill in. Only thing is, the MSD boxes make a kind of quick clicking noise that is annoying. Good thing the exhaust drones it all out...or is that a good thing??? Kevin Shasteen
A good ground is imperative & if you can install it where it always gets a good dose of "Cool Ram Air" is also nice..but you cant always do that when space is at a premium (Ex: small engine bays). I like the "Under the Cowl Panel Idea". You can mount it there & also fabricate a stell plate over it to shed any water/rain that finds its way inside/under the cowl (Car Wash!). If you have to cut the wires to extend the mounting of the box you could also install a "Toggle Switch" inline to the main power feed wire & mount the toggle switch just under the dash on the driver side which will allow you to have a "Kill Switch"...,that, hopefully, only you will ever know exists. Guest Anonymous
Guys, Thanks for all the ideas, I'll work on it this week if I have time and let you know where it goes. Thanks, Mark
Guest Anonymous
Well I decided to put the MSD box behind the drivers seat. I liked the idea of under the cowl but I wanted to be able to access it. Almost mounted it in to drivers side access panel area but finally chose behind to seat. Check it out. Thanks for the input. Guest Anonymous
Hey BLKMGK, Just checked out your web site, don't know how I missed it before. Sweet project, love those valve covers! Mark
BLKMGK
Thank you. Those are th eGrantelli valve covers that I think Jeg's is selling now - if not look at Summit. You'll have to weld in a fill or use a push in deal. I used the Moroso aluminum weld-in fill and we discovered the metal is a bit dirty. Weld came out okay but I had to "recreate" the threads a bit I think I've FINALLY got them sealed with serious RTV as every set of gaskets I tried was a joke. If there are any specifics you'd like snapped lemme' know - there are no secrets on my car (shrug). Running PIG rich right now and those headers are going outa' there ASAP.
