Rusted fuel tank?? Need a quick fix

All rigth, i found a Z with a rusted fuel tank, the engine starts and starves after a mile or two cause the rust is clogging the sending unit(That's what I was told by an import specialist cause I had replaced the fuel pump). I got to get that car to a garage where I found a fuel tank that is 200 miles away and I'd rather drive then tow.

 

Here's what I am thinking: there is a gaz line intake port(gaz return) and outake port. Since the outake(fuel pump line connx) is at the lowest level in the tank and the intake about three inches higher, If I switch the lines from intake to outake and vice versa, this would probably fix the problem temporarely as long as I keep the tank full. The rust particules should stay at the bottom of the tank and the port should not get clogged. Unless the fuel pump is very strong.

 

Anybody with gaz tank knowledge?

a z i just fixed for someone... it was fine for a 2weeks then the rust started to all fall off. (the car sat for 5 years)i even drained the tank and flushed it with 5 gallons of gas. hardly anything came out,, put a new filter in and it lasted 20 minutes.. once it starts loosening up its game over, i bought 6 fuel filters in 2 days, i could only go a mile before the car would start to hesitate and then stall- i could pull over and shake the filter that was under the car to dislodge the rust in it- that would get me another mile or so- but after 30 minutes of this i got pissed off and pulled the tank.... i also ruined a fuel pump before taking the tank out and having it boiled and coated inside .

 

save yourself the grief - ship the tank or tow the car. join CAA gold and they tow 100 miles, add CIBC or rogers att to that and they they tow as well, 2 tows to get there.

Screw it then, I'll let the car go. ANyways, with the current economic situation I could lose my job anytime. My V8 Z is already taken

a lot of cash and time. It was a good deal though, 78 280Z, 140kkm, 5 speed, color black(original color code but not paint) and the seats had just been rehopulstered, no body rust, bumpers good, 800$

take the tank to a local radiator shop and have them boil it (remove he sending unit first). when t he clea it out you will see all of the rust just poor out.then get like 3 filters and change them every hundred miles. thats what i did and havent had a proble since. my car also sat for 11 years.

This is what I did to mine, you might be able to do the same. Just go to your local AutoZone or JC Whitney catalog and get some Gas Tank Sealer, or some call it a Slushing Compound. Take the tank off, clean it out VERY well, perhaps with a little thinner, let it dry, put the sealer in it, shake it around, let it dry, put the tank back on and get a good in-line filter. $50 problem solved.

 

Money is always tight no matter what situation you're in - Hope you keep the Z, you'll thank yourself down the road.

ALSO napa and most radiator shops carry a sealer called Red Kote. I`ve used this on a 65 corvair(they don`t make new tanks for them)and an 85 GPZ 550 Kaw.It worked very well on both,just remove and drain the tank flush it out with dawn dish soap and hot water(you could also use the engine cleaning setting at the car wash)let it dry for at least 24hrs.pour the sealer in slosh it around,Pour off the axcess,and let it set up for a day...viola,Good as new,for about an hour and a half labor and 25 bucks

in my high school days i would work at a radiator shop in the summer. what we would do is go to home depot and buy about 3 or 4 gallons of muratic acid (i think thats how you spell it).

1: drain your tank

2: pour in about 1 1/2 to 2 gallons and let it sit for about 3 to 4 hours.

3: put some sort of plug or cap in the holes on the other side and just turn it over for the same amount of time.

4: pull one of your plugs and put in a high tech abrasive material aka: gravel,& slosh it around.

5: drian out all of the acid, rust, and gravel.

6: buy a friend with a pressure wash a 6 pack and proceed to spray it out for a while

7: make sure to dry it out very good " compressed air works good here but anything i guess will work".

8: put everything back together and say to yourself " why didn't i just buy a new one"

it is really not that hard of a process but just please make sure you have good ventilation when dealling with the acid. it will knock you out if you don't. i know the guy who owns the old radiator shop i worked at would kill me for giving out the "secret"

just wondering if you took the banjo bolt that hold the fuel lines to the carbs off and cleaned out the screen on em, my car sat for about 10 years before i got it and when i started driving it i was going through about 1 fuel filter a day sometimes more. Even with the filter in some little rust particals still made it through and i got the same kind of problem, run for a short time then starve for fuel. let it set for a few minutes and it would be fine sometimes and sometimes it would take an hour. Try cleaning em only takes about 15min.
