Guest tom sixbey
I was hoping to convert an 83ZX as well as my 240, but some of the posts on this board make it sound like you cant build a "JTR Style" set-back installation in a 280ZX. - is this true? I would need a 50/50 weight distribution and a t56, so the setback is a must! - thanks in advance for the help guys! ------------------ Tom 6B (73NIC)
Mike kZ
Tom, as far as I know, If you install a V8 in a ZX with the engine right over the stock engine mounts, the back of the engine will be right up to the firewall. So if you want a JTR set back you will have to move the firewall back also. If you did this I don't know where your shifter will come out. Guest tom sixbey
thanks for the reply mike! - sorry for hammering this, but if the v8 is against the firewall in a ZX, will the weight distribution be 50/50, or is the firewall on a zx farther forward than the one on the z? if the SBC is installed against the firewall in the ZX, will the shifter come out of the stock shifter hole? Sorry for all the questions, but i really have no idea where to get 280zx conversion information.. - thanks mike ------------------ Tom 6B (73NIC) "why slam on the brakes when you can slam on the gas?" Guest Locutus
Is is it a 2+2. If it is the rear is slightly heavier. I also think the ZX is heavier in the rear for all models. It is true that the firewall is 3 inches closer on the ZX, which eliminates the whole offset built into the JTR mounts. It is a bit wider than a Z. If you use aluminum heads, water pump and all the other goodies to get the weight down on the engine, I think it will be close to 50/50. My best advice is to get a measuring tape and start comparing measurements on your Z and your ZX it will give you a better idea of how things fit together. Me and Myron on made a few comparisions and the differences are mainly the firewall is 3 inches closer to the front crossmember, and the ZX is marginally wider from strut tower brace to strut tower brace. Mikelly
Sadly, this is an area where few of us have dabled for various reasons. I'd suggest you contact the few vendors who support this conversion (John's Cars & MSA) and go forth on your own and document everything. Then you become the Guru!
