thats great to here that it can be done with min. effert. i was wondering, what components should i get when i purchase the turbo motor? just the complete motor (i.e block, head, intake, exhaust, with everything mounted only on the mototr) and no electrical, or do i need the harnesses as well when i plug into the sds? i'm looking in the yards to see if there is one (most likly there won't be), what other parts can u think of that i might want to pull?

Thankx, Nic

First off, if you follow my link at the bottom of the page, I have taken the time to write a turbo buildup article that will answer a few of your questions.

$3-4k is a good figure. I started with a stock 82 JY engine, and went from there. If you are looking for 300hp then some type of programmable ignition/injection system is a must. Well, you could probably get by without it, but its not worth it!

You have lots of decisions ahead of you. Forged pistons/race prepped rods... All depends on how bulletproof you want to be at 300hp.

Welcome guys. Glad to see you are taking the time to put some forethought and planning into your project.....BUT. I noticed all the emphasis was on making power. 300hp in a Z-car is plenty quick, quick enough to outaccelarate a C-5, scare a Z06 and in a lightweight 240Z make a Viper push his go-pedal a little harder. 300hp in a stock Z-car is also downright dangerous.

My fatherly advice is to also budget for suspension and brakes upgrades, even if it means you have less HP to begin with. One of the beauties of building a turbo car is that the go-fast parts are mostly external bolt-ons and you can do them in stages. IMO, the stock Z suspension and brakes are inadequate even for a stock engine so make the brakes and suspension upgrades a priority and live to make 300hp.

Excellent point, Scottie. Luckily, you can also find some excellent experience and advise on suspension and brake upgrades on this site as well.

Scottie is right - a 300hp Z should be easily capable of honest speeds in excess of 150mph. Not a good time to find out that you don't have enough brakes. eek.gif

This would also be a good time to suggest doing whatever you can to ensure the your driving skills are up to the task, as well. I have no idea what your skill level is, but it never hurts to improve your skills whatever they are (you'll never see a really good driver saying that he doesn't need to learn more).

Believe me, even (or perhaps especially) with the necessary suspension and brake upgrades, a 300hp Z can be a handful. You have more than enough power to smoke the tires at ~50mph in a turn, and you won't have much time to figure out what to do if that happens.

If you can afford it, there are several very good schools available. If you don't have a huge budget, there are still several low-cost options available. Local car clubs often sponsor 'driving school' events that are reasonably priced. Seeing as how you are in Northern California, you should have no problem finding such events. I'll bet there are people on this forum that could help.

Like Scottie said... you should do everything in your power to make sure that you live to enjoy your 300hp Z. smile.gif

I'm glad Scottie and the others mentioned that. Things happen extremely fast at speed and unless your used to those quick driving reactions you can get hurt (or even killed) pretty quickly if you make the wrong correction. Not attempting to scare anyone, its your A$$ they'll be plastering not mine, but do know the cars limit as well as your own and don't drive over your head just to beat someone. Losings ones life over an ego is not worth it, live to race another day. The Gents bring up some good points.

hi, i'm new!!

i've been reading the other postings and man there is a ton of info. but i've decided i want to build a 280zxt and put into a 77' 280z (n/a). well i'm sure u all have heard this before, but what is the best setup for a strong reliable motor.

i have nothing yet (motor wise) so i'm starting from scratch. i a newbe on turbos, so go easy on me. i'm looking for an engine that will run about 300hps, when under minimal stress. what components are good to use (if i'm supplied by a junkyard filled with diffrent cars)? i don't need a monster turbo, so what is a good brand name or style that i could go with (or most commonly used)? how does everyone feel about "SDS". and any tips and tricks used to help pump the motor would be great. OH, i forgot, what engine kits are good to use when rebuilding a strong motor.

my budgit is about 3-4K (spread over time). i know it will take time to build my motor, and i don't mind! i look forward to hearing from u.

thankx to all, Nic

I'm pretty new too, but I've done exactly what you are looking to do. Just get a stock turbo engine from a '81-'83 ZX. SDS is very popular, and that combined with the stock engine, and an intercooler will easily get you 300hp. You will probably be on the ragged edge of the fuel system, so just get some bigger injectors (SVO turbo Mustang ones work) and an upgraded fuel pump.

Truly, 300 reliable HP is very easy with the ZXT motor.

wow!!, thankx for the responces. i will check out that web site Drax240z, but i think i was there just a few days ago. the site was very informative!

about the susp., it has been solved. i have coil-overs all around with 375lbs in the front and 400lbs in the rear (like a rolling rock). there fitted with solid rotors in the rear and vented four pistons in the front. and they will gently hug the road with a set of nitto's or dunlop's (everything is bought and mostly installed).

before the motor (turbo) is installed i will finish the interior with a role cage and racing seats/harness. i may only be 20 (everyone screams), but i'm not stupid, and if i race i'm always safe, ALWAYS... i got lucky in my old 79' 280zx, and was able to walk away shaken, but i have a craving that needs to be feed (once and a while).

thankx so much for the tips, i'm sure i'll talk more tech with all of u later, when i learn what i like and what i want.

Thaknx, Nic

Nic, i too, am 21 on the 22nd of this month. We are young. We are stupid and crazy sometimes. Thats just the way it is. It sounds like you have a great foundation for your turbo transplant though.

I am shooting for closer to 400hp right now honestly. Ill be very happy with 350rwhp (for awhile). Thats enough power to get myself into MAJOR trouble. Ive learned streetracing is a bad idea, and my GF chastises me for it. So ill try to keep my foot outta the floorboards for the most part.

Anyway, im talking out my rear again. I am probably going to cage my car this summer and upgrade brakes again. Im scared to death of that turbo motor! LOL

Ah Evan, thats why you haven't got it in yet! HEHE.

Seriously man, I thought I was taking forever at getting my motor together, but I believe you had allready started yours when I got mine started. Almost a year now. Scary stuff.

So have you finally figured out the piston fiasco, or are you still pondering making your own out of pop cans? biggrin.gif

Once again this site amazes me. We had what, 10 people in on the group buy back in october when we first started planning? And ended up with 12 people that couged up over $1000 and stuck with their word. You just don't see that often.

2 days you say? smile.gif I hope I can get my engine bay ready for the engine this weekend, and maybe even have the engine in the car by next weekend! (still need to find a 2+2 flywheel)

i'm very excited to here the news, and i'm glad i found a site with such knowledgable people!! i look forward to hearing all of the tips and tricks for the install. i'll be looking for a donor motor (when the funding is availb.). i wil most-likly rebuild the motor, simply because i know it will last, and thats one less step i have to take in the future. i am learning sooo much about turbo's my head is exploding, this stuff is so cool!

here is what i'm looking into buying:

forged low compreshion pistons (high silicon)

gap less rings

and shotpinged and polished rods

and the extras like larger injectors and such, but for the most part the internals (piston rods and crank) will be upgraded and the other stuff will be done later. it is easy to work on the out side with the motor in then the inside with it out.

Nic.

guess you found your way here..your brakes show up yet?

at least most of us agree,, you need a ZXT core and likely SDS or similar..

Ross at SDS tells me that with stock injectors and a intercooler (12psi) you will safely have 285 HP, to increase it beyond this you will need larger injectors and fuelpump..

oh and you will need a 240sx or mustang TB to get larger than 50mm..

i think in a month or so there will be lots of pics and such of SDS installs.. i got 2 setups here today and imagine Rich (drax) should have his in a day or 2..

there were 12 people in total that bought systems so as we get our cars together you should have more info than you would imagine..

as for the SDS i actually waited till i had 13 "say yes" as i figured a few would bail when it came time to pay..

it dropped to 8 but then 4more different people showed up to get in on the deal..

the motor variation was great, from Z18T 510's to FJ20, L6 nissan and AU V6 (jack) and 2 ford v8 cars...

theres not much use of a 300 that i know of..

the turbo on a stock ZX will likely be fine for what you want.. just need the motor complete..

yep that orange box is your stuff.....

FYI theres some posts around here somewhere about a place called TEP topend perf. i have no knowledge of htem at all but what i've heard "heresay" isnt the best..
