Is it the turbo?

I bought an 83 zxt 2+2 for the engine... i was told the turbo was bad because it smokes when spooled... Well I let it warm up today and then drove it... Hit it hard, the boost hit and I was off, a little white puff came out. Then I tried a few more times and no smoke at all... It spools up good and goes. Someone here mentioned it could be atf from the tranny to the intake through a vacuum hose... Which hose, there are to many.. hehe

I'm not sure if that is your problem, but it is possible. There is a vacuum line at the rear of your transmission, between the hose and the tranny is a small metal canister called a modulator valve. If the valve is faulty it can allow ATF to be sucked up into the intake manifold a burned. It should be a fairly easy job to replace the modulator though.

When a turbo oil seal goes bad it can be intermitent... if it sits for a while without running then smokes when you start it but then clears up once you get on it a couple of times... good indication its going bad.... could also be other things too. best way to tell is pull the turbo.. remove the exhaust housing and look around the turbine wheel if its a bad leak you will see lots of burnt crud. Also look for lots of side to side play in the turbo shaft. alittle movement is ok...but fwd to aft movement is a nono and means the turbo needs rebuilding/replaceing

Fraga, I've pulled two T-3's from cars in the pick and pull so far. The first one was a fairly challenging job, and involved the usual problems with rusty bolts and nuts that you'd expect. The main difficulty I had was with the upper left nut that secures the turbo to the exhaust manifold. Due to the positioning of this fastener, it's pretty much impossible to get a wrench or socket on the nut. I had to buy a 17mm crowsfoot wrench and use it with a 1/2" drive socket and long extension coupled with a 2 foot breaker bar to pop the nut loose. I also found it easier to remove the downpipe and the section of exhaust pipe forward of the cat with the turbo. The second T-3 I salvaged was loose except for that same nut, and was a piece of cake to remove. It helps a lot to drown everything in penetrating oil before you start. icon_razz.gif
