Audi Intercooler

Just curious, gonna start my turbo L28 buildup for my 240 pretty soon, probably starting stock or close to it and gradually building it up. Picked this up in a yard for like 8 bucks and just wondered if anyone had tried using one. It's no NPR of course but measures about 8"x14"x3" thick. Plastic ends on it. Would this be worth the trouble of installing or not when I get to that point? Obviously some intercooler is better than none, just not sure if it's going to make enough difference to spend the time on it or not.

Hi TempeZ, If you only spent 8 bucks on it and you can plump it in cheap it might do you a little good, of course people are going to tell you to go bigger and i will agree with them. You can probably turn up the boost a little, just watch out for detonation!!! cheers.gif

Yeah only planning on it as an interim solution maybe I'll plumb it ghetto style with wrapping paper tubes and Vaccum cleaner hose. Heck couldn't be any worse than some of the Civics I see driving around covered with all that self adhesive vinyl horsepower on tap. 2thumbs.gif

Did you get the hoses? These come with some great molded curved hoses that have a built-in taper at the intercooler ends. For $8 you can't go wrong. I was bought a compact intercooler from a JY once for about that price...the guy thought it was some kind of heater box and I didn't argue.

There is an interesting electronic feature built into the Audi unit and I'm not sure if it's a temp sensor or a pressure sensor. It might be a means of limiting boost if intercooler temp is too high. DAW

I'm not sure if you are talking about the same Audi intercooler I've seen... The Audi IC I'm familiar with is a dual pass design like the Saab 900, and as a result is completely inadequate for a Z, given engine displacement and airflow requirements. Just measure the cross-section of the airflow 4" x 3" = 12 square inches!!!! Factor in the fact half that area is fin, you can't flow 300 - 400 cfm through that without a SERIOUS pressure drop.

IMHO, sell the thing on Ebay. Don't waste a minute putting it on a Z.

Sounds like it's ebay time then hehe. Oh well I did get the nice adjustable remote wastegate and the K26 turbo from it too. (Tempted to put the K26 on my Geo Tracker since it's rather emasculated in the power department and I gotta have a daily commuter to beat on anyway)

Ok in looking at some intercoolers on Ebay I've noticed a guy selling intercoolers for the Ford Powerstroke Diesel engine equipped trucks. The core is 30x18x2, might be a tight fit (I'm at work so measuring isn't a possibility right now) but seems about the same size as an NPR intercooler maybe a bit wider. (I'm going with seat of the pants guestimate from the one my friend is putting into his MKIII supra).

Anyone had any experience with these? Seems like you'd get a decent amount of surface area to cool down the charge air temp anyway, just concerned about too much pressure drop. Still for about $250 doesn't look like too bad of a deal if the pressure drop isn't too much.

I must confess I didn't search for prior posts on this so if it's been covered, sorry for beating a dead horse. (Slaps self on wrist).

As for the Audi intercooler, I think I'm saving it for the evil Tracker commuter beast. It's only a 1.6 Liter 4 banger, and frankly the 80 factory horsepower ought to easily be doubled without stressing it out too much, actually the bottom end of that engine is surprisingly well built and designed, floating piston pins from the factory and all sorts of stuff you wouldn't expect including an alloy block. While it is a 4x4, with 160 HP, 2300 lbs of vehicle, and a two speed transfer case. I think it'd surprise a few people in an impromptu drag race with an effective rear end ratio of 8.19 in 4-Low (Just pray that there's no curves or the damn thing will probably roll over)

Tranny's up to a poer increase too, it's the same one originally put in the chevette and essentially the 3 speed non electronic controlled GM 4L30 (formerly known as the TH180) which in the 4 speed form is rated for 250HP/FT LBS and used in many things including the BMW Z3 believe it or not. Anyway if anyone here happens to have one of these little buggers and needs any mechanical advice on it I can probably help ya out so ask away. Probably not too likely given the general mechanical aptitude of people here, but hey the offer stands anyway. (Sorry I'm rambling it's boring working nights sometimes)

Sounds good, only one like it I saw on Ebay right now is at 25 bucks or so, almost not worth the trouble, I'll wait till a few of em are on and getting bid up a little.

I checked with some heavy truck yard in Phoenix a couple years ago and they were quoting 150 then too, figured the price may have gone up a little as I'd heard they had caught on to the fact people are using it as a performance item.

Not that I mind paying less for things of course. Now if I could just get a good cheap EFI system (1200 or so for an SDS doesn't exactly qualify as cheap in the wife's eyes unfortunately.)
