Guest timhypo
Which crate motor and cam kit is that? I've been finding varying HP numbers on those GM crate motors.
Guest Anonymous
I'm not certain I'd call the older small blocks down on power. It wasn't uncommon to see mid 300 hp out of them without even breathing hard. The LT1 is what 275hp or so stock? Torque difference is probably vastly different because the Tuned Port Injection was tuned for low to mid range torque. There is no doubt the LT1 is more efficient because of the fuel injection (and roller cam etc..). IMHO the major hassle in the DFI systems isn't usually the wiring, much of it is un-used, but your fuel system upgrade. The stock lines are a bit small, but that can be fixed with a low pressure pump from the main fuel tank to a small surge tank up front and the FI is feed from it. In the end its your choice, there isn't really a 'whats the best' because they all have they're compromises. (Early chevy good power, less fuel efficient, late model TPI requires mod's to breath well past 4800 RPM's). Either engine will make a good driver, the Fuel injection obviously will require less in the way of tune ups and be less persnickity in weather and altitude changes. Just an opinion of course. Good luck with your project. Regards, Lone
denny411
An engine is what you make it.Change cam/intake/exhaust,ect.The horsepower possibilities are endless.Except for very high hp,the sbc foundation is basically the same it all depends on what you put in it.that`s my opinion anyway. Guest Anonymous
Just wanted to get some feedback on everyone's opinion's on the best choice for a hybrid. Looking for something that can be used as a daily driver. I really like the idea of an LT1 but the install looks much more difficult. wiring harness? smog equipment? etc, plus more upfront $$$? Older SBC are much cheaper (friend selling a decent running '71 350 + trans for ~$300) but down on power, less efficient, and (although we don't have smog nazis down here) I worry somewhat about inspections, an ~87 chasis with a pre '80 motor. Haven't really considered 5.0's much. So please, any opinions are welcomed.

grumpyvette
here are a few of the better deals in crate motors http://www.recycler.com/com/chevy_only/page2.htm#383 http://www.amerspeed.com/engine_prices.htm http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?action=catalog_start&catid=
Guest Anonymous
You can run the early SBC to get your swap complete then add the Edelbrock or Holley fuel injection later. Summit sells the Edelbrock injection for about $1900. That gives you the injection, computer, harness, and fuel pump.
