Cruez
Hey guys....new to the board... I've been messing with Z's since I turned 16...And have always had at least one... Anyway, I have installed a Haltech in my '78 after doing mods to the engine that the stock FI couldn't keep up with. I am at my last stage but I cannot get the magnetic pickup to work correctly, I put a MSD 8509 signal converter but it doesnt create enough signal at startup. I took out the distributor and if I turn it fairly fast, the signal is fine.... What other alternative can I do that it fairly cheap?...I am on a tight budget... TimZ
That is a characteristic of variable reluctance mag pickups - the slower the rpm, the weaker the signal gets. What is your gap currently? It would probably help to get the gap as small as possible.
Cruez
Not sure but close to .030 What about alternatives?
Drax240z
I had a similar problem with my half-assed together electronic ignition. (the GM HEI module one, with mods) Anyway, once I lowered the gap things worked much better. To hell with factory specs, just move it a bit closer and see if it cures it. (not close enough to rub mind you)
Cruez
Anyone???.. How about if I just got another distributor with an optical pickup??... Which car can I pull the distributor off of ??
GrayZee
Some L28 turbo engines have a light emitting diode type pickup, 1983 and maybe 82?
Guest Tom Scala
.030" gap is WAY too big. Factory calls for .008"-.016". I agree, just tighten it up as much as you can before it touches.
