Proper engine oil flush after intake swap

We just changed our intake manifold and carb on the 383 block and fired it up. Filled the radiator and topped it off. Checked the oil and saw some water and oil mixture. We knew there was going to be some mixture so we would like to know the best way to flush the motor and replace the oil and filter. Should the oil be changed twice? Use the old oil filter while doing the flush or a new one? Should we use some flushing additive to the engine oil? These are some of the questions we would like to know the answers to.

Couldn't find any previous posts on this subject, but if there is please send me a link to it. Would be more than happy to read and learn. Thanks. twak.gif J & G

Not totally sure but I can tell you that my brothers gf added water to her radiator by pouring about half a gallon in to her oil. Car is new beetle. She asked him about a week or two later why her coolant light was still on. Then she shows him where sher put the water. Oil was drained and apparently most of the water had boiled off during normal operation. So to get to the point, change the oil and filter and it should be fine. Not sure I would want to buy that beetle as a used car though. Mark

ethylene glycol is different from plain water,it will attack rod and main bearings, the best way to insure minimal contamination is to drain the coolant from the block by removing the plugs on both sides of the block (close to the oil pan rail) then remove the radiator cap.this will drain almost all of the coolant from the engine and most importantly, the heads 2thumbs.gif I would just use one of the common engine flush additives and then change the oil.It shouldn`t be a problem. ;)

Hey Mark.

Thanks for the info. But if there is some proper procedure we would like to know. Really don't want to hurt that motor after all the work we put into it. twak.gif J & G

Hi Denny.

Thanks for the information. We'll go and get some regular engine flush and change the oil. NO oil in the water system. Just got some water in the oiling system after swapping the intake manifold and carb. Just want to be safe and take care of that engine. twak.gif J & G

J&G,

Hope it all turns out OK. I understand about the time and effort in a nicely done motor. I'm sure some one will chime in with the info you are looking for. Was a good time to share a blonde in a beetle story. Mark

If you didn't run the motor or turn it over you're probably o.k. If you didn't crank it over, there should be no water/coolant in the oil pump or galleys.

I'd just drain the oil, probably the filter too, although it should not have any in it if it wasn't cranked or run.

Maybe dump another quart into the top of the heads to flush it out, but that's probably over kill too.

Hi Pete.

Thanks for the information. We're probably just being a little bit paranoid. We're just going to change the oil and filter and check the dip stick to see what's going on. I'm sure everything will be fine. Thanks again. twak.gif J & G

Thanks for the advice! :D Took 2 oil changes to flush the block out, but everything is running smoothly. Took it for a hard run and it performed great! Everything is coming along. Thanks again. 2thumbs.giftwak.gif J & G
