Guest Locutus
This doesn't relate to a Z car, but it is GM related so I thought I would ask you guys for advice. The sitiuation is I have a 455 in a olds delta 88, it has 48 orginal miles on it and it has been babied all its life so its a good engine. The question is, I also have a 1981 full size K-5 Blazer. My friend ran it dry on oil and it stopped running, after it kewled down it started but it uses alot of oil and she basically screwed the engine. I was thinking of putting the 455 into the Blazer, since all I really want is a good vehicle for towing a trailer and hauling stuff around. Nothing hi po, just a strong work horse. So I guess I need to know, is the bolt pattern the same for the tranny, motor mounts etc on a big block specifcally one in an olds? The main concern is the tranny, since it is 4X4 it would be a bitch to get a tranny to fit if its a different type and still keep the 4 wheel drive Mike
Guest RON JONES
bellhousing is a different bolt pattern,I think JEGS sell an adapter plate to mount the chevy trans to the olds, buick, pont.bolt pattern.I think the motor mounts won,t be a problem. John Scott
Mike, I've got one of those adapters! (I'm an old Olds hotrodder) I can't remember, but I think you also have to space the converter to flexplate with appropriate washers. The olds 455 is a torque monster! Mondello makes lots of cool hipo parts. He probably put a couple of kids through college on my old(s) addiction! If you want to pay for shipping, about 10-12 lb, it, it yours. Let me know! John Scott
Mike, adapter plate should be coming any day now. No charge. You can by me a beer someday! Seen plenty of 10 and 11 second Olds in full bodied Cutlass/F85s/442s...at 6000ft. The best "stock" engine I ever had was the 425 ci out of a 67(?) Toronado. BIG lifters bores allowed killer camshafts. My main gripe was they were expensive to build and hated high RPMs. Funky trunion rockers with adjustable pushrods! Remember the 70 W30s? Knew a guy who put a stock 455 in a camaro and ran low 12s @ 6000ft. John Scott
Myron, what is the casting letter on the heads on the 455? A, B, C,...? [This message has been edited by John Scott (edited June 01, 2000).]
MYRON
John, the numbers that i gould find through the grease were "GB1 9T" "048" "912 73" "B12 73" some of these may be innacurate because a "B" looks like an "8" and with my hand wrighting that "GB1 9T" might be "GM 9T" the heads had huge intake valves and factory guide plates and large almost square ports with the corners kinda rounded out the ports look just like the # "0" the intake is 4 barrell 3 "GMT 333841" the block has "O or Q then E459752" on the front of the block. the back of the block has 3999289 and the words "high-perf pass 7" under the cam gear
John Scott
I honestly can't remember which heads were the most desirable, but I thought A/Bs. in a LARGE letter cast into the head. Joe Mondello, now probably run by his son, Bernard(I think) would know. There phone #s are still listed in perf. magazines. In any event, there cool engines that make lots of power at relatively low RPMs. Never seen guide plates on an Olds. Just the wierd trunion rocker mounts. Guest needwaymorespeed
There should be a large letter on the front of the cylinder by the #1 spark plug youll find a large A thru J letter F being the most desirable-w30 0lds 442 19 70 C the second most 67-69 cars-these came with the small and large valves B the thid on 66 cars A the fourth found on 65 cars it sounds like myron has a 68-9 olds toronado 455 block oldsmobile rock-would love to stick one in a z-but too hravy and afraid the excess torque would twist car needwaymorespeed
John Scott
N.W.M.S...... your olds info is commendable...(John remember F is for fast, later letter, better head,..got it) and I used to play with these. Too many years ago! Did you or do you run the beasts? I remember how my cheapie engine stand would bend under the massive weight. My fist engine rebuild, back in '76, a guy named "Shorty" a dark man with a little beret, about 5' by 5', lifted my block (a 400) out of my mom's T-bird trunk!
