Howdy All-

This is my second post after I introduced myself to the board a couple of months ago. I’m happy to report that I finally have something to write in about. The deal that I have been negotiating has gone through, and I’m picking up my ’72 V-8 240Z this Sunday in Connecticut. This is my first 8 cylinder Z (I had a ’78 280Z a few years back).

Here are the details:

The body is in good shape overall, red with black interior. It’s an older conversion, done at least 15 years ago. It has homemade engine and tranny mounts that appear to be fairly robust. The conversion was done fairly well, with good attention to detail (gauges work, interior switch for electric fuel pump, 4pt roll bar ect). The drive line is from an early 70’s Corvette. 350 w/ Muncie 4spd (close ratio I was told?), aftermarket intake manifold, Quadra jet 4 barrel carb, and runs well. I’m not sure which year, or which engine it actually is. I’ll be curious to get a number off the block and find out. Can’t remember the brand, but it has a thick aftermarket aluminum radiator in it with an engine mounted fan. Also, is has the ‘vette differential in it, which I haven’t heard of a lot of people talking about doing. It should be more than strong enough, and also should be posi. I haven’t had enough time to study exactly how it’s mounted, but looked solid. The original Datsun u-joint half shafts are used.

The brakes and suspension are stock as far as I know, and it has new 235/60-15 (rear) and narrower 60 series (front) tires on older aftermarket alloy’s. The exhaust system is complete crap, from the stock manifolds all the way back through a single rotting and crimped 2 inch pipe. Lovely.

The car certainly isn’t on the cutting edge relative to how other V8 Z’s in the forum are developed, but for $2k it seems like a good starting point. My plans are to work out the brakes and suspension this spring and summer as I drive the car (not my daily driver), and then pull the engine and tranny next winter to replace with…? I like the idea of fuel injection and a t56, and would be more than happy with 300-350hp. With that in mind, it seems like there isn’t an easier or cheaper way to go than pulling a complete drive train from a late model camaro, and just dealing with the wiring headaches.

I’ll be writing back with some more specific updates and questions once I actually get started. Until then, I’ll be dragging it home.
