I am considering a 240Z or 280Z buildup when i find a good priced in my area. I was planning on doin the 3.1 Stroker kit buildup on the L28E block. Since i don't know a whole lot since i'm only a high schooler and haven't had much hands on experience i'm not gonna go with turbo. Even though the results would be great i'm not gonna do that. I was wondering if 50mm Mikuni carbs would work with this setup. Since i don't want to mess with fuel injection and electrical setups just somethin hopefully simple.

Admittedly carbs appear less complex than FI, but if you check out the post on "Triples, take me to school" you'll see how complicated they can be. Also more expensive vs. a conversion with OEM parts from your donor. Here is my recommendation for what it is worth... Buy a nice 280zx turbo that you can drive, then spend your time and money learning to do basic auto repair and maintenance. Get it painted and add some nice wheels and tunes. After a couple of years when you have learned a ton, buy a 240 and swap your already paid for and learned turbo driveline into it. Now, if you don't like my advice, here's some more. The 3.1 L motor will set you back at least $4k to get it together not including nearly $2k more for carbs. The 50's are too big. (Once again see post referenced above) The 3.1 is super cool, just not the best spot to learn IMO. Good luck regardless.

I agree... if you're gonna spend the kind of money it takes to get a stroker done right, you might as well go with a turbo. You'll get more power and probably more reliability... as long as you're smart with the boost. If you do build a 3.1L, you may even be able to run the stock Z SU's on it... I myself run a 2.9 with SU's and it runs great... and I know I've heard of at least one 3.0 that ran SU's, so I imagine they could work. However... if I had known then what I know now, I never would have build a N/A motor... for the money I've spent I could have a turbo motor easy and probably be getting 350+ horses right now which is over double what I've got.....

I hear all this talk about $4000 3.1 stroker builds. Has anyone actually built one for that kind of money? I priced it out and it doesn't get that high. That includes all the machine work and pistons. Mine on paper comes to around $2000. I have done a test fit with a diesel crank and 240 rods. No interference on my F54 block.

I agree with the others above that for an entry-level of experience the L28ET with all the factory harnesses, ECU, fuel pump, etc from a wrecked 280ZXT would definitely be the way to go.

This might not be the recommendation for someone of a higher experience level with easier access to parts and machining who wants to build a purpose-specific car, like autocross, or some classification re turbo vs na. DAW

The only guy I know personally who built a 3.0L L6 said it actually cost him closer to $5k. His cost that much because he went the high road though... good quality forged pistons, high quality rods, work on the crank like balancing and knife edging (I think... not too knowledgeable about that stuff), and a LOT of work on the head. To me it always seemed that if you were really gonna do this kind of motor that his way was the way to go. However I'm sure you could do it for a lot less, maybe even close to $2k. Still... with a little bit of hunting I've found good low mileage turbo motors that were in cars that were smashed from behind (amazing how common that seems...) that the owners were willing to part with the motor and all the electronics, or many times even the whole car, for around $500. Add to that another $600 to get it swapped in the car, give or take, depending on who you know that can do the work.

 

I gotta say though, IF I had the extra money to have fun with, I wouldn't mind building up a really well built stroker, if it could get near 275-300hp's at the wheels. On a 'budget' though turbo is the way to go.
