What Busted?

I just got back into town and cranked up my Z for the first time in a week. Started driving to the store and noticed the temp was getting high. I stopped at a light, and antifreeze started blowing in the cab through the defrost vents, and all on my windshield. Is this a busted heater core? I was also told that it is probally a busted head gasket. Anyone have a clue? Also I noticed that when I removed my muffler (running an open cat.) The temps were a little higher. Is this related?

Did you check the heater hoses going to your heater system first? If they are alright, maybe your heater core did spring a leak. A busted head gasket, I dought it. Is white smoke coming out of the exhaust? Is your oil milky looking?

No problems with smoking. I didnt think it was the head gasket, but you never know. Its Sorta like the non replacable u joints. I had never heard of that before (Nissan only thing). It may have been something wierd. I will check the heater hoses tonight. I bought this car a month ago, and have been having a lot of little problems. I think I am gonna swap the N/A engine out and go for a 1985 turbo engine. Any good URL's on where to find them?

While you are at it check the little water cotrol valve that the heater hoses run into. It is just on the other side of the fire wall in the interior. It will be tough to get to it with the dash in the car but it can be done. I had one blow once and thought it was the heater core. These things will usually fail before the core goes.

I had a heater core leak once and it truly was a pain to fix. Had to get inside the heater box behind the heater controls and under the dash....if your arms are 2" in diameter with 3 elbows it would help. ugg.gif . If your not worried about needing the heat, take a piece of copper tubing and run the intake hose into the outlet hose in the engine compartment and completely bypass the under the dash stuff...not the best way but you should be able to drive the car at least. OH yeah...clean up the moisture, you don't want it rusting.

Hmmmm Heart of Dixie?

I live in Georgia and I can tell you that we have many many days that a heater is neccessary. Without one your defroster will also not work so when you have ice/frost on your windows you will be SoL. Also when it rains and the windows fog over it will be impossible to drive.

Now if you never plan on driving in the snow, freezing rain or cold I guess you are right, who needs a heater. By the way the other night on my way home from work we had a huge thunder storm roll through the area, it was raining cats, dogs and cows! The windows in my old pick up began to fog over and I had to use the defroster set to heat to clear them up. The temp was about 90 degrees.

My friend recently drove to Louisiana to buy a 1984 Jeep CJ7 with a Chev 327. The guy in La said "The heater dont work, we dont need one down here" my friend handed him the $12,000.00 cashiers check puke.gif and said "yeah I live in Alabama and it doesn't get cold enough for one there either." puke.giftwak.gif

Just something to consider before passing on fixing the heater.

Where in the south are you located? I have the old heater core that I took from my 75Z that I will give to you if you want it. I bought a new one while I had the dash out because I didn't want to have to go under there again anytime soon, V8wannabe is right if you have teeny tiny hands and arms it would be easier to get to. It is way easy once the dash is removed :D

Good luck.

I am in Montgomery, Alabama. Yeah your right the lack of defroster would suck in the rain. I am plaining on tearing my '84 N/A 300zx down end of this month, middle of next month for some serious cleaning, repairs, and mods. I bought this car a month ago and its dirty, real dirty so I wanted to clean it really well, and fix all those stupid lil things like broken oil pressure gauges, worn belts, and slow power windows ect ect ect ect ect. After that I am thinking about a rebuild, and some paint, I plan to turbocharge the N/A engine, and install an intercooler as well. I would be glad to use your heater core if it will fit. Email me with some details. Tell me a little about your car.

I didnt think it would but you never know. I will replace it when I tear my car down. I am sure I can add that to my already long list of parts I already have to replace. Buying a new to me car is so much fun...

Yep the list never ends. Just when you think that you are done you always find something else that you want to buy. For instance, if you take out the dash, you suddenly discover that you need to refurbish the heater unit. Take off the rear wheel to do some brake work and you decide that you want to replace the drums with some of them cool disks. It never ends brother, welcome to my ((and everyone elses)) nightmare cheers.gif

Georgia Flash!. U R right the $ LIST never ends. The fellow at the Rio Visita Meet with the Silver 300ZX Tomahawk comes by to visit and check the progress on my Fat Boy Tomahawk. Before he gets here, I run out and try to spruce up "Fat Boy" with the chrome roll bar "necktie" and the new shoes to make a good impression on the visitor from California that I am not a total country redneck with an aging unfinished Tomahawk.. The new front 15 inch wheel centers will not clear the early Toyota 4X4 brake calipers. The old 14 inch aftermarket wheels bolted on with no problem. I now need at least 3/8ths + inch longer wheel studs and spacers for the new wheels to bolt up to the front spindles.
