Lockjaw
Well I would clean all my connections at the ecu and AFM with break clean and reconnect. Does this happen when the car is cold or warm? If it happens when warm only, what it could be is a module on the side of the distributor. There is also a filter in the inlet of the factory fuel pump, and it could be clogged. You need some sort of little hooked type little deal to pull it out. I would also make sure the engine is properly tuned. A spark plug wire could be grounding, which is a good culprit too. You could have a cracked distributor cap, although I have not seen one yet. Try that and see what you come up with. Also run some STP gas treatment thru it ( the red bottle) just to rule out water in the gas.
Guest Hotwhlz
About a month ago I noticed my 82 hits a flat spot on acceleration. At normal acceleration it hits a flat spot at about 2500 rpm, then picks back up and accelerates smoothly until changing gears. This happens in every gear. During a hard acceleration it doesn't happen. The other day it knocked off right after I had started it and was sitting there idling. But it started right back up. Two days later it died as I turned a 90 degree corner and wouldn't restart without sitting for a couple of minutes. I replaced the fuel filter (never seen such a huge fuel filter) but it's still shutting off at idle. Are these two things (dead spot and shutting off) related and does anybody have any idea what to look at next? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Guest Hotwhlz
Thanks for the reply Lockjaw. I'll give those ideas a shot. I changed the points and plugs right after I noticed it bogging at speed. It seemed to help for a little while.......say a couple of weeks. Then the flat spot was back. The distributor and plug wires are the originals. I had thought about changing the cap and wires just for the heck of it, it's bound to be time anyway. I wondered about it being a problem with the fuel pump cause it is running one minute and the next nothing. But I'd think that if it were a fuel problem it would buck like the engine wasn't getting enough fuel. It doesn't do that, it just dies. The first time it died the engine was cool. It had been sitting while I was at work so it had sat for about 4 hours. The next time it cut off the engine was at normal operating temps. I had been driving it for about 15 minutes. This has all came about since the weather here got so hot and humid. Wonder if that has anything to do with it? Thanks again for the reply, you've given me several things to check. Guest Anonymous
When you hit the flat spot in accel, are you moving the pedal thru it's range or is it already floored? If you're moving it, maybe it is the Throttle Position Sensor? Just a thought. Good luck.
Guest Hotwhlz
Moving it normally is when the flat spot happens. Pedal to the floor it doesn't happen. The TPS switch was my thought on that too, but I wanted confirmation. I have a Chiltons manual on my 280ZX. Their instructions on setting and testing a TPS are confusing to say the least. Never thought I'd find anything harder to work on that my Corvette. Thanks for the reply Gravy. Ron Edit to add: since the weather has cooled down considerably I've driven the car with no problems. The flat spot is still there but the stalling problem is gone. Since this only happened a couple of times it has me thinking that the car was vapor locking or something else to do with heat. Again thanks for the replies. R
Lockjaw
HOw can you change points on an electronic distributor?
Guest Hotwhlz
That would be kinda tough huh? LOL My bad. I've been working on my cars all my life and when we tuned them way back when we always said "change the points and plugs". What it should have said is I changed the rotor button when I changed the plugs. The other button was pretty rough. Ron
