hey,

I just got an '81 280zx. when I first start the car it starts then dies when I put on the gas. but the next time I start it, it runs pretty rugged but it gets better and then runs nicely. so I guess I have a cold start problem. I was just wondering what I should do to fix this problem.

thanks

eric

I hate to give you such a cop-out answer; but, if I were you (which I'm not) I would invest in a factory service manual.

As the factory service manual will give you the power flow of runability problems.

It will also tell you exactly how to diagnose any and all injection sensors & components within that power flow; in which some generic manuals wont even hint at how to test those items.

It is probably just one component-but it could be a combination; this is why it is important to follow the diagnosis procedure found in the engine fuel category of the factory service manual.

Sorry for the cop-out answer.

Kevin,

I would start with the basics first, which means plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Then I would set the timing. After that I would disconnect the harness at the AFM and ECU and spray the connections down with brake clean and reconnect.

If it still runs crappy, you need to start testing stuff, and a factory manual is the only way to go there.

A more descriptive detail on what happens would help. DOes it spit thru the AFM when you start it? Does a bunch of black smoke come out of the tail pipe?

What happens when you start it and just let it idle, will it die? Also you do know that you are not supposed to give a fuel injected car any pedal prior to and during the starting process, right?

See if any of that helps.

sorry guys, I'm only 15 and so my knowledge is limited(like 1 year of highschool auto service) but I'm doing what I can. I got the service manual and decided I needed to adjust the AFM so I did that and fixed my problem of not taking gas right when it starts up. now it starts surging at a little less than 2000 rpms weird.gif . I kept adjusting the thing and did some more adjusting but didn't seem to solve the problem. So what do you guys think. if it ends up that I have to get a new AFM then will a turbo AFM work on a non-turbo?

thanks,

eric
