Guest Anonymous
I have a 78 280Z and I bought it for $300 because of a problem with the rear end. I went in and replaced the diff, mount, and mustache bar and after that it ran great. I didn't replace the diff with a new one however, I used my brother's old R180 that came from an earlier Z he had. Now about 6 months later (I'm not sure how many miles maybe a couple thousand) a new noise from the back has emerged. As you drive normally you can't hear anything, but as soon as you slow down and hit about 10-5 mph you hear this slight pounding noise and its going at beat with the rotation of the tires, i.e. when ur going 10 mph it pounds faster than when you're at 5 mph. But this ONLY happens when you are decelerating and only between 10-0 mph or in that low speed area. As soon as you hit the gas the noise disappears even if your still at low speeds. We took off the tires and turned the wheels by hand back there and there seems to be a noise coming from one side of the diff more than the other, or were hearing wrong and it's both side but it's definitely in the diff connection to half shaft area. Does this sound like a diff problem or possibly bearings in the half shafts? Also If I were to have to look for another R180 or R200, what is price range on those used or say out of a junkyard? Thanks!
denny411
I would recomend replacement with an R200. they are relatively easy to find and shouldn`t cost more than 100.00 It also could be a u joint in one of the halfshafts. It seams to have the same symptoms as a bad driveshaft u joint.
Guest Anonymous
Thanks for your recommendation, but it was my own stupidity that caused this one. The Rear End job I did the first time was my first time working on a car and I forgot to put lock washers back on the driveshaft - diff nuts. After I had taken most of it apart I went to disconnect the driveshaft and realized the nuts were finger tight and the driveshaft moved back and forth an inch or two! So I put lock washers on all of them, put it back together, and it ran great.
