Tires from Tire Rack

Recommended Posts

Called Tire Rack for some closeout prices on tires. Guy there said some of the Kuhmo 712's were pretty cheap, so I said what the heck and bought four of them ($93 ea.) at about 1 pm Wednesday. 10 am Thursday morning they were AT MY DOOR! Now thats service for ya! The money wasn't even taken out of my checking account yet. Got them mounted later that day and took some pictures. While moving one of them around for a pic or two, I decided to weigh the whole deal. Ready for this 45 lbs. each!!!! Damn, that's 180 lbs. total. Almost like bolting on the wieght of another person to your car, sheees...

Here's a couple pics:

Mat,

What is the quality like? Seems like a lot of Chinese companies have started selling tires lately. I will be buying a set of 17 X 7 Konigs and was looking at the available tires. They had those Kuhmos selling pretty inexpensive but I was wondering how they ride. Let us know if they are worth it or not.

In true gearhead fashion.. puts the ole wheels right on the kitchen counter! :P JK man! at least they were new and clean.

On the note of Khumo tires, I've been running Khumo Victoracer 700's on my 280...on the street no less, and have been extremely happy with them.. they must be pretty decent quality, because they needed minimal weights..or possibly none..(can't recall for sure, because I have rarely need balanceing weights with my rims.)

The only downfall with the Victoracer 700's are they are basically a DOT legal race tire.. not really for the street...They pick up lots of rocks etc, so i rarely go down dirt roads, or just very dirty paved roads. Wicked hook up for launching!!

I won't be able to tell you guys how well the tires behave for some time, there is still salt on the roads in Wisconsin. You can check out some of the reviews for these tires at Tire Rack, which weren't bad at all.

LOL... hey if my counter is good enough for a top serloin steak, then it surely can be used to present some cool wheels :D (everything is clean anyways)

You know ZR8ED, the guy that mounted the tires mentioned how suprised he was at the what little wieghts these tires took to balance them.

Just got my kuhmo ecsta MX's mounted and on the car today. Only about 10 miles on them but I have used the victor racers for 2 or 3 years now and they are a great track tire. Tire rack and Road and Track both give this tire a very favorable rating and the price was unbeatable. Mark

They are just an off brand I found on Ebay for about $400. The brand is called Zoom and the style is called P32. The wheels and tires combo cost roughly $800. Not bad IMO for 17X7's and some decent rubber.

Thanks for the compliments. I can't wait to see what they look like on my white Z. Hopefully the color white on the Z and the white on the wheels aren't too many shades off, it might look kinda goofy if they are.

I have 712s on my Talon. (the 16" combo weighs over 60lbs :P )

For the price, Kumhos can't be beat. Decently sticky, not noisy either! They probally are just as good as tires which cost 2x (upto 150 for my size 16's), but not as good as like BFG KDWs, etc which run 200+ for a 205/55 16.

The 712 are good enough for me to turn 1.8 60's...

BTW- Kumho is Korean not Chinese, and they hold a 30% share in the R-compound market (the V700 is about 10 years old)

don't forget - tires and rims are unsprung weight - not included in car's weight that rests on suspension. The only force is the torque required to turn them

...and stop them, and for handling purposes we know high unsprung to sprung weight ratio is evil. Sounds like your wheels are probably pretty heavy, and maybe the tire too, but I dont know that tire setup. If you look at the ship info for both products you can probably tell which is the culprit, if not both.

The wheels are the culprit. The tires are actually pretty light. I knew that for the price I got the wheels for, they most likely weren't going to be light weight. I was prepared to take a weight penalty anyhow, because "you get what you pay for". The money I saved was used for parts to get my engine together faster. The good side about all this? (the guys running a turbo know this) All I have to do is turn up the boost to compensate :D Ain't no thang... the car will be pretty quick regardless.

There are other issue's with unsprung weight that I should be concerned about, which I know, so no lectures please

Down the road it would be nice to get some custom light weight wheels made for the car, but right now it's just not in the budget.
