Guest Anonymous
hi, i dont know much about carburetors, so please forgive me. does anyone know what type of setup this is? [/img]
Mudge
There are a few different possibilities, I can't tell exactly other than the obvious - its a tripple carb setup, probably with no choke. They seem to get poor MPG, plus the no choke doesn't make it that great in cold weather for a street car. They are also extremely expensive from what I've seen, not worth it IMO unless your in some kind of race organization that restricts you to using carbs only. With that in mind, other than the cool factor, there are modded SU cars making at least 287 HP if there are not cars in the 300+ range now. So being a budget kind of person I dont see a reason to go to tripples other than "wow" factor which I think is ricey unless it somehow serves a purpose. Better AF distribution I could take as a reason, but it sure is an expensive way to do it, I'd likely get a custom intake before that. Guest Anonymous
I have triple webers and the fuel entry is different. Probably either Mikunis or Dellortos. Triple setups get a bad rap mostly due to poor jetting or not being adjusted properly. If you understand sidedraft designs they are the easiest and quickest carbs to adjust. Syncronizing can be tricky but when everything is right they work great. SUs are good carbs and perform well but no way can out flow a set of triples. They are expensive as are most performance parts.
Mudge
I dont recall hearing anything better than 10 MPG yet, but I dont see why they couldn't do better. I dont now how many people are hopping on dynos with carb cars though.
Guest Anonymous
I have an L26 and was getting 15mpg prior to syncronizing I tore the suspension out of my car and have not tracked it since the final adjustments. I expect 17-18 regualr driving and a bit better on trips.
Mudge
Not too much worse than my dual Weber downdrafts It just seems, sinful and wrong that a little 6 banger would get 15 MPG and not be making tons of HP, but thats what my car started out as. Guest Anonymous
I know what you're saying. My two prior 77s got roughly the same as I'm getting now. If you drive them like a grandma they will get milage that will amaze you. My first 77 I could never get better than 19 as my daily driver. But when I moved from Las Vegas to Dallas my wife following me in the moving truck (65-70 MPH) got 31 mpg on that trip. I generally make the first and second gear shift from 5500-6500. Fun for driving but not good on the gas milage. I think it is very hard to determine how efficient eevryones car is because driving habit play such a huge role. Most Z's are driven hard because they can take it but that doesn't lead to good milage. As far as price goes I agree a set of new triples is not a great investment but the price of a used set with the manifold and linkage is not bad. Mudge
I dont know that I've seen them for under a grand yet, except maybe a set of Hitachis. I dont get better MPG pussy footing it, vs revving it now and then. I skip shift ALOT, 1/3/5 and etc, and still this is what I get MPG wise, maybe mine need a rebuild but I'm going turbo soon. gramercyjam
These don't look like any triples I have seen before. I'd venture to guess that they _could_ be throttle bodies for FI setup. --john
HS30-H
Not very clear when you zoom in on the photo, but they look just like 50PHH MIKUNI SOLEX to me. Alan T.
Guest Anonymous
would this be a better setup? or is it pretty much the same. [/img]
Mudge
Why are you looking at pictures for an idea on setup? Tripples are tripples, they are going to look very close to the same. What you need is data. There are at least 3 different size tripples to choose from, figure what power your going to make and go from there.
