Guest chevsun
I fired the 377 today and what a treat. Fired right up, brought it to 2500 rpm's let the cam break in. Then I pulled it in the garage dumped the oil and filter then as much as I hated to I went for a ride with the wife while the engine cooled down. When I got home I went over the motor retightening everything refilled with oil and started it up set the timeing, and idle mixture and loved it. It is all forged and balanced, ceramic coated pistons, the works! What a nice sounding motor. The 350 sounded good through the aerochambers but the 377 sounds much stronger and is. It has the comp cams 282XS dual pattern mechanical cam with .520 intake lift, duration is 244@.050 on a 106CL and it's a hard hitter pulling 12inches of vacuume at 900rpm. I cant wait to get it out again. I,ve changed to a 4:11 with the cv upgrade and I am curious how it will effect the T-56's 1'st gear It might end up useless but we will see. I am running this through a Mcleod Street twin clutch press plate setup. Thant enough from me suffice it to say I am one happy camper. pparaska
That is such a good feeling when you crank up a hopped V8 and it all works! That sounds like one screamer of a car! BTW, is the cam one of the Xtreme mechanical flat tappet ones?
grumpyvette
congats on the birth of the new BABY 377sbc now just don,t see how many trees the car can hit, doing power slides thru the corners and ENJOY!!!!!! BTW after the first 100 miles a swap to SYNTHECTIC OIL will add years to that engines life.
Guest chevsun
Thanks for the words guys. Pete I'm not sure if it is from the extreme energy line or not but If you wan't to look it up for possible use the comp cams grind # is CS XS282S-10. Grumpy I plan on moving to synthetic as soon as possible. I was going to ask when but if you think 100 miles is right I will go with that. What weight would you suggest. I have 5w30 HD in it right now with #25 pressure at Idle.
Guest Anonymous
Sweet combo! You should like the 4.11s with the T56; I have had a couple late model Camaros with T56s and 4.10/4.11 gears (in the original rear, then a 9" Ford), and it was the perfect gear for the car. First gear wasn't completely useless by any means, and 6th gear actually became useable at sane speeds; I only turned 2300 at 85mph in 6th. grumpyvette
use the thinest weight that will still maintain a 25-30 lb oil pressure at hot idle temps on most new sbc engines thats 10w-30 but if you need to lower the oil pressure you may need to use a mix of 10w 30 and 5w-30 if it needs to be higher add a few qts of 10w 40 or 20w 50 to the mix , the important thing is to maintain 25lbs of oil pressure at hot(engine temps up to your standard operateing idle temps.) 200f-215f oil temps
pparaska
Yup, that's the Xtreme mechanical flat tappet line. I have the one just below that, CS XS274S-10 in my 327 (haven't started it yet). Seems it should have about the same dynamic compression as I have with 9.7:1 static if you have anything like 10:1 static compression. Guys, is it O.K. to break the cam in with straight 30 wt oil? Not sure where I heard that, but it was advised to me to use that for cam break-in. I WILL be going to Mobil 1 in 100 miles.
DavyZ
Pete, the Redline Racing Oil rep at the Good Guys meet told me to use straight 30W for breaking the engine in--then after that, switch to the other oil. Seems like good advice from someone who knows. Davy
pparaska
Thanks Davy. I have Castrol 30W in the motor for cam break in. I will change it to 10W30 and what ever 10W30 10w40 mix I need to get the idle oil pressure as Grumpy suggests. Don't worry, I'll also clean out the System One deep oil filter at the same time. Guest JAMIE T
I've been running Mobile 1 extreme conditions 0w-30 synthetic oil in my late model Z28 since I have owned it. When I changed to it for the first time, I coudn't beleive the differance in how easy the engine revved. I have since used the same oil in my 240z(stock L6) and it revs sweet also. BTW both cars maintain good oil pressure with this super light oil. Also, I have always used regular 30w to break in an engine. I am anxious to get my V8Z going so I can have all the fun you guys are having
Guest chevsun
I broke the engine in with 10w30 and had 45lbs hot with 5w30 valvoline an 900 rpm's today. This will be about the last time I run it until the snow is gone and I can put some street time on it. With 10.5 compression it sounds strong I can't wait to turn it loose one time.
