John Greenslade
I am currently completing rebuild of front suspension on 70 240Z. I bought new front control arms and burned out centre bushing with intent of putting in new poly bushing from energy suspension. The diameter of the Energy suspension bushing is the same as the outer diameter of the metal shell on the original bushings so I had outer shell pressed out and installed the energy suspension poly bushing. Afterwards, as all good engineers, I read the energy suspension bushing instructions which said you should leave in the original metal shells. My question (a) how would you get the damn bushing in with the shell in place and therefore ( are these instructions correct. I have attached control arm to cross member and am about to complete the front strut rebuild and then put wheels back under car - so it would be easy now to correct problem if I did it wrong. CruxGNZ
John, You are right. The metal shells come out of all locations except the mustache bar. !M!
slownrusty
Yes you have to get rid of the metal shells definately and they can be a PITA to remove. Regards - Yasin
Guest battg8r
What is the best way to get the sleeves out? I'm in the process of replacing my bushings and I am now at that point. I burned the old bushings out without much trouble, but now I need to get the sleeves out. I am thinking about using a hack saw blade to cut through the sleeve then push them out. Thanks for any help.
auxilary
What I did was take a hacksaw, and carefully cut the metal sleeve in half on opposing sides from the inside. Then I took a 27mm socket, put it ona press against the control arm, and pressed out the sleeve.
CruxGNZ
Yeah, what Aux said. But if you don't have a press or access to one, just cut the sleeve in two spots, then take a standard screw driver and wedge it between the sleeve and the control arm, then give it a couple good smacks with a mallet and it will pop right out. Just make sure you make two cuts in the sleeve otherwise it just kind of curls up and gets wedged in there. !M!
Guest battg8r
I used the hacksaw blade and a small punch. Once I made it through the sleeve in two places I tapped out. A pain, but a small one. Thanks for the help.
