Tire load requirements

I just had a very amusing conversation with one of the guys at the tire rack. I was trying to order some 215/40WR-17 Yokohama AVS ES100 tires for my new 17" x 7" centerlines. Anyway, they said this tire does not meet the load requirement for my car. In addition to this tire not meeting the requirements they said that no 17" tires they carry meets the requirements.

How did you guys that ordered from them get around this? They said they wouldn't sell the tires to me and they wouldn't sell tires without a car listed.

If 17" tires dont meet requirements for a 2400lb car how the heck do they ever sell them?

grr

You must have gotten the new guy. When I ordered my 17's they told me that they were not the recommended size for the car, but they were more than happy to take my money. :D

What tires did you order? Did you tell them it was for a 240z?

BTW the 40 series tires have a load rating of 1074 lbs I think. Is this really to low? The 45 series version of the tire has a 1207lbs load rating but the diameter will be 24.6" vs the 23.9" of the 40 series.

The load rating for a 215/40R17 should be 915 lbs at 32psi. With a standard factor of safety they still have plenty of reserve at GVW. If I remember correctly, the cargo capacity for a Z is 450lbs. Add that to the ~2350lb curb weight and you get 2800. Divide by 4 for a Z's 50/50 weight distribution, and you have only 700 lbs per tire. This is well within the load rating for that tire.

Hey mark, what size rims are you running? I am going to be using 17x7's with a 225/45/17. The reason I am asking is because you said you are running 235's. Just wondering if you are using 7" rims or 7.5" rims?

Thanks,

Guy
