Heat protection for fuel filter etc..

Hey guys. I was just out testing the new engine again, and found that everytime I stop the car for a while, when I go to restart it, it wants to barely run.. run on 5 cyl etc.. I pull away, drive for a min, and everything is fine...I can hardly get it to rev when I first start it, and I have to be extremely carefull pulling on to the road, cause it just wants to die..

But like I said, 1 min or so, and everything is ok again.

Now my fuel filter if very close to my valve cover, and it is unlikely that I can easily move it. (last resort) So I'm wondering if you can wrap them with something that looks ok, cause it is very visible. I don't mind wrapping up some of the fuel lines themselves, cause I'm sure I can wrap them up and make it look good.

What kind of material would you guys use? A simple aluminum shield may do the trick as well... or at least help..hmm might work well enough to determine if that is indeed the problem...

Thanks.

Maybe some of the silver sided fiberglass(or is it still asbestos) sleeving similar to the oem stuff on the early Z's fuel lines. Or you could maybe fab up a SS shield? Something like this:

Or something like this?:

Hey Scott.

Remember we are still using winter gas up here. It boils at a much lower temp. I have had problems with this in the past. The fuel would boil in the rails…the hot spot on my motor. The insulation is still a good investment.

Thanks!

It never occured to me about the winter gas! I put the car away in late fall, and brought it out early as well... hmm excellent point. I never had this problem last year with the car. The fuel system has not been changed, and I even drove it on the track in Aug with no problems...hmmm

I'm still going to build a shield for it..I'm just planning something that will look good as well.

Is the filter mounted on the passenger side? If so, I wouldn't be concerned about it. I'd be more concerned with the fuel rail getting too hot. I have the same problem after the car sits for a few minutes. 1/8 mile donw the road, it's running smooth again. Are you using a webbed intake manifold?

Z ya! a webbed intake? hehe man I'm not an inliner!, I am running a VG engine hehehe manifolds on both sides.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

I found some of that fuel hose coverings. I've also found a cleanable billet aluminum highflow filter.. might be better than a stocko Nissan metal cased filter...looks nice as well.

I found the heat problem with my car. When I moved the cooling fan from the driver's side to the passenger side of the radiator, I started having these heat problems in traffic on a hot day. I moved it beacuse when the fan turned on, it was interfering with my magnetic crank trigger, causing the motor to stumble. I've got a 280ZX injector cooling fan on there now, but it is ugly as hell. I may move the fan back over to the driver's side, and get some uMetal to magnetically shield it.
