Phantom
Install still progressing well. Z radiator back from shop where it was converted to 4-row unit and installed. Stock Camaro Z-28 fans & shroud modified slightly and looks like it was made for the install. Beautiful fit. Permanent AC compressor mount installed and complete accessories with original Z-28 drive belt installed. Original LS1 vacuum hose for vacuum assist on brakes routed to Z booster and fits like it was made for it. Wiring harness starting to go back in. Upper and lower radiator hoses installed. Heater hoses routed. Took measurements to ensure shifter locates exactly where I need it to work with my seat position perfectly. It is really starting to look like the real thing! Phantom
I'm really glad I got a digital camera a few months ago. I encountered a bunch of questions last night as to where all the various portions of the Datsun wiring harness routes and what each connector was for. The good news is that I had already provided my Datsun Factory Service Manual that has lots of good sketchs/photos in it along with some decent wiring diagrams. Tonight I'm going by the All Z Car Specialist salvage yard and see if Jerry has a 77 in the yard that I can get a bunch of digital photos of to email to Johns Cars. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. We were looking at my '83Zx last night to see if anything on it was relevant. About the only thing I could use it for was to identify the location of the alternator wiring and where the original coil had been mounted. Not quite sure why we needed the coil location since the LS1 has a coil-on-plug configuration but at least they know. Amazing the number of things we found that had come loose or were falling off the ZX while we were looking at it. Spent time in the garage tightening stuff back up last night and still didn't get all of it.
maichor
Sounds good! I spent last weekend cleaning the garage. I also took the engine out and taped over all the exposed areas and bead blasted it. The corrosion from the battery acid from the wreck is all gon now. The thing looks new! I also removed the intake and valve covers to inspect everything. It looks good. I am going to change the oil and filter before I fire it up. Anything else I need to do? The sandblaster gun only cost me $10 on clearance at Walmart and it worked fine. I will need a new ceramic tip, though. It is still working alright but it is chipped and cracked. The bad news is that glass bead is very expensive. By the way, if you do this, be aware that long term exposure to glass bead can cause silicosis, a nasty lung condition. I used a painters mask and goggles. Phantom, what radiator hoses are you using, stock Camaro, universal? I am doing hoses and wiring now myself. I am hooking everything up to the motor first, out of the car. It is on a homemade stand. I should be starting it in a week or two. I can't wait!
Phantom
Maichor, See email I sent you. Don't have the part numbers of the hoses. They are not universals.
maichor
Hey, thanks for the pics, don't worry about the part #'s the upper hose will definitely not work for my radiator. The lower might. I am thinking about using one of Summit's universal flexible hoses. They have a rubber with fake SS covering and a SS like Autozone has. That will be a decision for this weekend. Your project sure is looking very good! Best of luck! Check your email.
spotfitz
Didn't Chris's dad from the club just pick up a '77? You might try getting with him if Jerry doesn't have any complete '77's. I also think Dennis has a '77 2+2. Let me know if I can help out on this. Johnathan
Guest Anonymous
Hey Bill- The last time I was there, Jerry only had a semi intact one. <mostly because of me> But if you need a 77 that you need pics of, then drop me a line and I'll bring you mine. Crappy blue and all.
Sumo
Hey Spot, I have a friend sniffing around for a 2+2 mind giving me details so i can relay to him?
Phantom
Found a black '77 coupe at Jerry's that was manufactured within a month of mine. It was intact under the hood so took a bunch of pictures and emailed them off tonight. He also had several 2+2's in his yard. A couple 280Z's and a couple ZX's. Looked like a decent car could be made out of any of them.
spotfitz
I take it Jerry has gotten some more Z's in since the last time I was over there. I may need to swing by this weekend and see what he has. I'm in search of a '78 coupe.
