Guest Anonymous
What would be better for a v8 (5.0) datsun... A twin turbo setup or a single turbo. The car wouldn't be a daily driver but what would be worth the money. Would the single have better power and give better gas mileage out of boost. Which is overall better to have....Thanks Kenneth Kell Would I at least hit high 11's with a stock turbocharged 5.0? The car well mainly be for the track but a little crusing machine as well. SleeperZ
In GENERAL, a single turbo will be more streetable, spool faster, and the intake will be easier to plumb. Twins are generally used on a V motor to ease the cross-plumbing of the exhaust, and perhaps counter-intuitively, spool slower for the same total flow capability. It is possible to get huge amounts of power out of each, but for very high flow rates, two small turbos will be cheaper than a large one. Either route you choose, you will get into 11's with EASE - I don't know how reliable the stock 5.0 is, but if a L28ET can do it stock, why shouldn't a 5.0 be able to? Guest 1320the260
86-92 5.0's have 9.2:1 compression TRW forged pistons. but the E7TE truck casting heads BLOW! you'll need some good flowing heads if you're gonna do that. try some AFR, or trick flow. you don't hafta worry about valve clearances if you keep the stock pistons because they already have valve relifes. Guest Anonymous
Yeah I was looking into the Trick Flow High Ports.. They say thats a better head for drag racing and turbocharging applications.
Guest Anonymous
Why would a single turbo spool faster than twins? Two smaller turbos should spool up way faster than one bigger turbo should they not? And if twins spool faster I'd also say they are more streetable since you don't need huge speed before they kick in. I thought that was the idea behind twins, but maybe i'm wrong. I thought that was the idea behind twins' date=' but maybe i'm wrong.[/quote'] No, in fact the opposite is true. With twins you have only half the exhaust to drive the turbo. With half the exhaust flow, your twin turbo turbine must have 1/4 the inertia of the single turbo turbine to spool just as fast, and for twins, though they are smaller, they are not 1/4 the inertia. More like 1/3 to 1/2 for equal flowing twins. Result: Twins spool slower than an equivalently-flowing single turbo.
Moridin
Alas, we have discovered a single will spool up faster, but you forget the the coolest part of it all. You can say you have a "twin turbo V8." I'm still wondering about the twin vs. single. What if you were to use an equalizer pipe between the two turbos? Would that help anything at all, or just be counter productive? Guest Anonymous
With forced induction the flow numbers aren't qutie as critical, to run your low 11's the stock headed 5.0 will most definatly be enough depending on your attention to controlling the intake air charge temp. With good planning and smart selections 600hp would be very possible. Look at the Peformance Motorsports Supra with a single T72 has never had the valvecover off and runs 9.81@153. Granted that is more than likely on high octance gas and lots of boost, so its got to be an 11 second ride on purely street tune. Just a massive fuel and cooling systems and I believe you will more than exceed your expectations.
