Guest tt350
I jacked up the car today on the right frame rail, and the jack stand made a whole through it! AAAAAAAAGH was the sound my mouth made. Anyway, are holes repairable with POR15. Do they provide like a metal mesh to fix them for the frame. If not, are there frame rails for sale to weld in? Thanks, I hate this rust ($*$. Oh well
aviatorx
POR and wire mesh will not recreate a frame rail for you... Where in the rail do you have damage? I would suspect there is further damage than you realize if you have jacked thru the rail ..... You will not find OEM rails available - they are NLA. Zedfindings.com makes good repair kits, or you can bend your own depending on your skills (since you've mentioned POR as a fix, I'd call Charlie!) Cutting them out of a donor car is an option as well, but if the donor has rail good enough to consider taking, take the whole chasis and buid up on that one! If you are serious about a long term fix to your rust problem, you will need to ascertain the total amount of rust damage, and that means cleaning, prodding and poking at the remaing rail(s) and floors to see how extensive the damage is. Once you know the limit of the rust, you can set on a program of repair. good luck - we've all been there
jt1
tt350, with the horsepower #'s you're planning on, the car is gonna need full subframes anyway and now is the time to do it. There's a lot of good info on the subframes here, a search will turn up a lot of reading. John
Guest JAMIE T
TT350, please don't be offended by my stating this. If in any way shape or form, you plan on putting anything close to the amount of power you are talking about, You better do some research. Take a welding class, and/or expect to pay big bucks and build a custom chassis. You WILL NEED a custom built chassis with bullet proof suspension like a 300ZXTT rear end, CV's, etc... Expect to be crawling through a jungle jim of roll cage. For 500 RWHP, At the very least, you will need a roll cage and welded in subframe connectors. Please don't go into this blind, these cars are very flexible, as in very thin metal, lack of frame rails. Remeber, they were only designed to handle the stresses of a 150hp 6 cyl. And that was 30 years ago. Expect to put as much into your total chassis(including brakes, wheels, suspension drivetrain, etc...) as you would put into your engine. I'm speaking in cash. HMM... Lets see. Brakes, $1500 suspension, $900 Wheels, $1000 minimum for light weight R230 diff, $700 minimum, once you include shaft shortening, etc... Custom bent SCCA legal cage, $1500 Some folks(like myself) can get all this stuff done cheaper, mostly becuase we would have to build it ourselves. I am a certified welder, TIG, MIG, whatever. I have all the fabrication facilities that I need to complete the jobs desribed. If you can't do this work yourself, then plan on spending big bucks getting it done.
