Guest Venture-Z
How can I quiet valve chatter? I have my valves adjusted, or at least pretty close. I am running about 10:1 compression, on 91 octane with no ping, but my valves chatter like crazy. Can I just tighten them up another thousandth or so? Any other suggestions? Z-Gad
pick up a new set of lash pads, readjust the valves and it should go away. It worked for me before
Lockjaw
Did you change the cam? Theoretically, if you get the rockers arms on different lobes, that could cause your problem, they wear in on the lobe they start on, and getting them mixed up will cause the racket. IMO. Be careful not to get them to tight.
Guest Venture-Z
I got an N-42 head pre-built with a mild street cam in it, but I don't have the numbers for it. The guy said he got it pre-built from MSA, and it had never been run. The valve geomitry seems to be just about right, and all the hardwear in it is new. The motor is freshly rebuilt with about 150 miles on it, and runs great except for the chatter. How tight is "to tight"
Lockjaw
Did you change the rocker arms? In other words, are there new one's to go with the cam? If that is one of the MSA schneider cams, they are supposed to be adjusted 8 thous intake 10 thous exhaust, cold, I believe, and I would not go tighter then that. I just put a cam in my ZX flat top motor, new crower, and used some of the resurfaced rockers from Delta Cams, and it is quiet. I used the proper lube and broke it in. I will be putting one in my turbo engine soon, using more resurfaced rockers, and expect the same result.
Guest Venture-Z
Either they where new or resurfaced. I adjusted them to 8 and 10 while hot. do you think that is the problem? Do you adj from under the cam or between the arm and lashpad? I'm about to re-adjust them this week. Any tips or tricks?
Z-Gad
Yo adjust from under the cam and it should be a snug fit to press your feeler gauge between the cam and rockers when you are done.
