80LS1T
Well I went the drag races at Wisconsin Interanational Race Way tonight. It was my first time to see live drag races! It was awsome!!!!!!!! I can't wait till my car is done. I am shooting for mid 12's. I think after seeing all those Camaros with LT1's in them run high 13's low 14's, I should be good for high 12's atleast. There was also 3 modified snowmobiles down there. They ran high 9's at like 135-140mph!! Now I wish I would have kept my sled(I sold it last year because we dont get much snow anymore)!! I would have modified my sled for that! Then there was a car down there that was runing 24's, yeah thats right 24 seconds! It was an old beater of a car. It was kind of funny watching them race that car because they were doing dial-in's and he was racing like 12-13 second cars so he would have a 10 second head start! Then there was a Ford Prob with a really really bad driver. Everytime he went to shift from 1st to 2nd he would miss 2nd and then the same with 3rd. It was really pathetic cause he did it all 4 times he lined up to race. Made me laugh though. Then a guy I know with a 94' Z28 was running and his first run was a 14.3, second run 14.7 and the last one I saw was a 14.2. So I asked him why he was so slow and he said his first run was a 13.3. So I said lets see the paper. Then he started to feel around in his pocket "looking" for the slip but guess what he coundn't find it! Yeah right so he runs three 14's and one low 13? I doubt it. This guy is a big talker and that just proves it! Anyways, I just can't wait to get down there with my car! Guy
Guest tt350
Hey, dont make fun of those guys that run 24's allright I ran a 26. No really, I did. Well i dont remeber exactly what I got, but it was in the twenties. I went to a drag race with my freinds, and I had my 1991 VW Vanagon GL with me. (For those that dont know, this car makes 90 hp stock from the factory, and it weighs 5300 lbs). They dared me to enter, so I did. Man it was a hoot So many people were laughin when I finished, it was worth it. 8) I also entered a makeshift drift competition here in Modesto, in the rain. Man was that one funny Pop the clutch, turn, pop again, turn. You dont understand, this finishes the 1/4 before hitting 60mph. It is really pathatic. I dont know why I got stuck with it, im like a freakin speed demon. I guess its to keep me from killing myself? But.. that thing has no nose, and if I crash into a matress, it would cripple me. Also the body roll on that thing is so bad, youdd think your riding in a tub of good ole' J-E-L-L-O! Worst thing is its aerodynamics. The thing has worse aero than a flat nose semi! When ever a semi passes me by at more than 60 mph, i almost lose control of the car. It gets aroun 8 mpg (seriosuly) with a 4 BANGER! There are NO advantages in owning this car at all. Only one I can think of is the extremly smart interior space design. Wheel to wheel, the van is about as long as an accord, but the interior is bigger than a Yukon XL! But doesnt reallly help me much, cuz I drive it alone alll the time. (occasional road trip to the snow, but thats it, not worth it) Yet, it has clubs made for it Its for sale if anyone wants it!? Seriously, 4500 its yours! Never abused, always driven like a rare classic (yah right) Its rare alright, just no one wants it (except for those people who hate speed and hippies, and the people with huge families, and campers) So ya, dont poke fun at the guys who run 20's, theyre doin it for YOU! Have a good laugh, ya know?
two40
My mate ran a 3.36 with my old Skyline 33T. He's got the slip to prove it too. A plastic bag was blown across the track which set the sensor off. I was there to see it too. In Sydney we are finally getting a proper drag track built. Won't have to use the concaved half drag prepared track that runs onto the circuit anymore. It should be ready by the end of this year and will go a long way in keeping the young from racing on the streets. There's a Australia vs USA event scheduled for early next year too which should be interesting. Bring on the smell of rubber.
80LS1T
Well WIR is not as fancey as the track in that picture! That's ok though just as long as there is a light to say go and a clock that says how fast you made it to the other end of the track! Thats all I need to be happy! So how fast should I run with a 3000lbs (280ZX I am just assuming it weighs about that, but I think its a little less isnt it?) and about 350ish RWHP? Not sure about my torque cause I havent put it on the dyno yet! Also what kind of tires and rims should I get for drag racing at the track? Cause I dont think my 17x7's are going to be too good for the traction department! Thanks, Guy
CruxGNZ
You should run high 11's low 12's in the quarter. Get yourself some drag radials for the strip. Not sure on the wheels though. What did the ZX come with stock 15" or 16" wheels? I took my Z down to Da Grove for shitz and giggles and ran a pitifull 16.9. It was like the car would get moving, then the power would taper off at ~4500 rpms. I had to short shift it, because I didn't want to wait and see if it would even hit redline. With my Z weighing 2560 with me in it and 5/8 of a tank of fuel with the stock L24 putting out ~160 horse (G-Tech) the thing should have run a mid-high 14. When I brought the Z back to storage I found that one of the throttle linkages, those little plastic sockets snapped in half right at the threads and was hanging on by just a hair... no wonder the car just petered out, the throttle was not opening up all the way. I'm just supprised I made it home without it busting off. Never even saw that when I was checking the car over before going to the track. Guy, You should come to the Olympics of Drag Racing at Da Grove May 24-25. Funny cars, Outlaw Pro mods, Pro stocks, LOTS OF JETS!!, Chicago Wiseguys and LOTS MORE! You just can't miss this one. !M! 80LS1T
My 1980 NA ZX came with the 14x6 Iron Cross rims I was thinking once the rest of my car is done I might get 2 rims for the rear of the car so I can get some 8" or 9" rims(with the help of proper back spacing!) Just so I can have "some" meat back there! I have no idea what to look for in a drag rim and tire set up though. All I know is to get a nice light weight tire. As for going to Great Lakes...I think I have to work that weekend . If I dont I might just head on over! That would be great! Guy
