head carb cam matching question on a 383

Recommended Posts

OK here goes I have a four bolt 350 block with ARP studs and windage tray, a stock 400 crank swinging GM rods with ARP bolts topped with speed pro pistons (part number L2491.030(Forged)) I was wondering if anybody could point me to a good head cam combo for this engine. The other parts I have gathered are 7/16" ARP rocker studs 1.6:1 roller rockers I would like to keep them. the other variables are a TH-700R4 with a 3000 Stall 9" non-lockup converter and a Dana 44m Diff from a 1982 Corvette (3.08:1??) the projected tire size is 255/50/16 (more once the coil overs are installed) I'm not opposed to Iron heads if the will work they may be heavy but they are cheaper!! I may add a little blue bottle in the future. The car will mostly see street duty but WILL be on the track at least once a month!! I am a bit concerend about the compression I would like to run on 89 octane but if 94 would be better I dont have any issues with that. Also if yoou could give me a estimated HP & Tourqe figure that yould help. Thanks much I love this board!! Keith

those pistons are for a 383 and will have about 10.6cpr with a 64cc head and about 9.4 with a 76cc head, so if your going to use the cheaper iron heads ,get the 76cc size if the cam is mild but if your looking for a kick butt high rpm combo the cam with the higher duration will bleed off some compression allowing the smaller head combustion chambers,

FMP L2491F 383 10.6 9.4 FLAT 5.7 F 1/16,3/16 497 311.95

heres what I would suggest to get the most for your money, match the CANFIELD 223cc heads to a CRANE #113841 solid lifter cam and a #2925 super victor intake to a 750cfm carb with 1 3/4" headers

that combo will get you about 460hp/460tq and will work GREAT WITH NITRIOUS

the victor jr (edelbrock #2975) and a 750 carb are about ideal for a hot 383 combo if theres any chance of hood clearance problems (its still fairly tall but it works very well with those heads) a 700cfm carb works slightly better on a 350 BUT be aware you may need a drop base air filter and possiably a hood scoop with any high rise intake, look here,

Hey Grump thanks for the info thus far I was just reading some of your other posts about roller cams and since I have not bought any cams ot lifters yet I was wondering what you would recomend to go with a full roller set up? I only plan on building this motor once and dont mind waiting to get what I want! Also were do you recommend I purchase those canfeid heads? Keith

this cam

is an excellent hydralic roller cam for HOT STREET STRIP use in a 350-400cid engine, but be aware that you can,t run it with stock un-machined chevy heads without running into serious coil bind and piston to valve clearance problems on most chevy heads and each combo is differant so no one cam fits all or even most combos, and you need a .600 valve lift clearance to coil bind MINIMUM to run this with 1.5 ratio rockers .650 with 1.6 ratio rockers while still maintaining a .100 intake /.125 exhaust to piston clearance.
