260 -280 fuel tanks..

Just a quick question guys.

Has anyone seen a 280 gas tank beside a 260 gas tank?.. I'd like to know if the fuel line fittings are the same.. same # and same places.

I have a 280 FSM, but not one for the 260.

I'm thinking of using a 260 tank for better aerodynamics under the car..(long story)

I know the physical tanks look different; at least the bottom part of the tank. And yes this is still needed for an FI setup.

Thanks!

Hey Scott:

The tank in your car is a totally different shape than the 260 tank. I have a '75 280Z tank in my 240, but after '77 I think it was, they redesigned it for whatever reason. I think it'd be easier to do a fuel cell then to try to convert your Z to an earlier style tank.

Yea it probably is the best way..

I just can't justify $1000+ (to do it right) especially when there is nothing wrong with my current tank! hehehe

I'd like to see a 260 tank..it must still mount under the car the same? the rear pan of the car is fairly flat..

Oh well.. the belly pan is coming along nicely anyways..

Didn't the tanks change as a result of Datsun moving to the temporary spare tire (smaller storage area) from the full size tire? If you want to increase the ground clearance to teh tank, can't you just cut a section out and reweld it? You'll obviously lose some fuel capacity, but ......

if you look at the back(hatch area) of a 240/260, then look at a 240 you can see the difference right away. you see, in a 240Z you can get the spare to sit below the metal surface of the hatch floor, But in the 280 the raised the spare tire well to make room for the redesigned tank, Thats why there is a false floor in the 280Zs (so the spare can fit, they just built a raised deck)to the best of my knowledge, The 240 tank will fit all models (240/260/280) but the later tanks will not fit the 240.

maybe, you could cut out a spare tire well from a 260/240 and weld it inplace of the stock 280 well, then put in a 240/260 tank with a sump built in?

I put a summit sump kit on mine, But its not near as nice as Brads kit.

I happen to have a spare 240 tank thats a little banged up, But if you weld a sump kit onto it then you could hammer and pull the dents out.

anywho, dont know if that helps at all
