Guest Anonymous
Hey grumpy this is a question to you becuase you referred me to a couple of books a couple of months ago. I have a couple of questions. 1. the No. 6 Enigine is a Nitrous injected engine and i was just woundering if it could be a daily driver. the engine i want to build is a 383 NOS with around 400 Hp with out nos and around 550-600 with. and i was woundering if that would be possible. 2. next i was looking around for a .5-1 horse power die grinder and sears did not have one. auto zone did not have one and other places did not any. do you know where i could get one? 3. The heads chapter. i was thinking of goin with the 186's but i am not sure of what all the symboles stand for:( and what the difference is. 4. No.4 engine, its a 383 with out nos and i was woundering if you know what i could do to add nos to it. if it was capable of the extra power or not. Thx for any help. -Ark

utvolman99
Well, I dont know about the nitrous but you can without a doubt build a 383 with 400HP that is very streetable. My setup projects to to make about 450HP on desktop dyno. I know that the desktop software is not completely accurate but it can be pretty close. Here is my setup... 350 sbc 9.7:1 compression ratio Dart Iron Eagle heads (215cc) Victor Jr. Intake Holley 750 Vac secondary Block huggers with 1 5/8 primaries XS-268S solid lifter camshaft DTD projects 449HP @ 6000RPM and 434lbs/ft of torque @ 4500RPM. I am only using Hyperutectic pistons so if I do put the squeeze to it it will be to the tune of 100 - 125HP. One thing to keep in mind is that if you have higher compression (around 9.5 - 10:1) you may have to use racing fuel with your nitrous! grumpyvette
first thing you need to know is that a set of IRON EAGLE OR PRO LIGHTNING HEADS WILL PRODUCE MORE POWER CHEAPER THAN PORTED CHEVY HEADS, AND THAT DAVID IS AN EXPERT PORTER whos head work is something your not likely to duplicate!and that a set of chevy heads are VERY EASY TO RUIN IF YOU ARE NOT VERY GOOD AT WHAT YOUR DOING! by the time you buy a good die grinder, carbide bits, new valves, sears, guides, springs, retainers, oil seals, and do all the necessary machine work those seemingly cheaper chevy heads will cost waaaaayyyyy more $$$ than the aftermarket heads and work less effectively too! yes that #6 engine will be very streetable and makes less than 450hp N/A (but use the better aftermarket heads they will work far better)and notice that engine has big dollar $$$$$ forged rods and pistons and crankshaft that he bought used at a swap meet!(if you bought those parts new they would cost about $2700) http://www.procylinderheads.com/223260035A.htm http://www.dartheads.com/sbiron215.htm if you insist on spending more money for less hp and takeing a chance of ruining a set of chevy heads, this place has ALL THE TOOLS ETC. http://www.goodson.com/ the # 4 engine will need to run the CRANE#113801 cam to work with the nitrious and be limmited to a 125hp-175hp nitrous max because of the crank, rods, pistons it uses and even thats pushing things! Guest Anonymous
I understand that he is a professional porter but he had to start some where. and i'm not going to start on 383 for my zx but i was goin got start on my 1961 MG miget(britsh car, so i am sure the parts will be different but the basic engine idea should be the same). i am going to try and get alittle aquainted with an engine and all the parts and slowly work my way to the 383 as time goes buy. i know that i to want work on engines and that i am going to need tools and work my way up to a good enough porter. so i figured i would get them now. and about the swap meets, i know he goes to them all the time and that he gets good deals, so why cant i do that?and could you inform me where i could find where they will be held. Thx for anymore help -Ark
