Paint inside of patch panels before installing them?

Hey guys. I've finally gotten around to doing the body work on my '73. I ordered some patch panels from VB. I got the "dog leg", or lower quarter panel in front of the rear wheel. My question is what should I coat the inside of this panel with to help prevent it from rusting later?

Also, when I'm welding the new panel on, do I drill holes to weld through(plug weld?) in the locations that originally were spot welded? I have the old panel cut out. I did a very nice job of it, and used a spot weld cutter to remove it. I used a grinder to smooth out the remaining metal and wire wheel on the grinder to remove any trace rust and paint. I Ospho'ed the area and am about ready to put the new panel in place.

Jamie,

I just got done doing this on both sides of my car (lovely surprise to see when I sanded off the paint and filler fell out leaving gaping holes).

I placed the new VB panels over the area and marked with a sharpie, then cut out with a disk, leaving a little extra, just in case. I drilled out the spot welds in the jam and along the fender well and pulled off the old piece.

Then I placed the new panel on again and used the grinder to sand down the edges of the body until the fit was perfect. Then I butt welded the panel in, starting on the top and in the jam. I drilled holes in the new panel to attach in the same manner as the old panel in the door jam, wheel well and at the bottom along the underside.

After I welded a few welds along the top and jam, I clamped the bottom and welded in the drilled holes.

I also had to make a panel for inside of the well (facing the tread of the tire), and before I welded that in, I sprayed some hammerite into the inside of the new panel.

Hope this makes sense.

Tim

Tim, yes that helps. I've done everything you said except painting the inside of the panel. That was my concern. I knew it needed something. I am having to make the same panel you did on the inside of the fender(facing the tire).

Thanks

" " what staledale said. I used that stuff, it was silver, supposed to stand up to welding heats and still seal the metal, problem with hammerite is it probly burns of at that heat?!? im not sure but that is what most paints, not specialized for welding, do.
