Differences in body styles

hello all!!! ...newbie here, please be patient

OK, so at first I REALLY wanted a 240Z for the style and weight that

it provides...but, the more and more I research the topic, the more I

think that ANY pre-82 body style would be cool (well, maybe pre 79)

because it has the same "feel" as the original 240Z. Especially given

the amount of customization that will go into the ride...

personally, I would like the original look, with a 280Z hood, chrome bumpers,

and a L28ET engine...so, REALLY, what's the difference among the 240Z,

260Z and early 280Z (aside from bumpers).

I'm still learning, so, I appreciate patience and a flame-free experiece :D

Also, I am reading "how to restore your Z", so, if the info is in there, just

tell me and I'll get to it eventually.

thanks!

G

as you go up in years so does the weight. mostly due to government safety and emission restrictions. the bumpers got bigger due to crash safety and bumper shocks. the cars got more pollution controls added. the 280z got beefier struts, stub axles and rear end adding to overall weight. as displacement got bigger and air conditioning got added weight increased also. that is about all i can think of. hope it helps.

well remeber that the 240Z and early 260Z is like the same car.

late 260Z and 75-76 280Z is like the same thing. 77-78 are abit heavier.

if were going past exterior then the interiors are all abit different.

240Z had alot simpler and IMHO alot better looking (and i have a 280Z).

280Z's also had stronger frame rails which did add weight but makes the car stronger too.

240Z's got the cool turn signals too, but i think the 260Z and 280Z got the cooler tail lights... hehe.

thats why early 260Z owners are so damn lucky!

Hehe my 75 has lost a lot of weight due to trashing the (in my opinion) ugly large crash bumpers, air conditioning unit, and steel hood. I have a fiber glass cowl inductions hood and a Motorsports Auto aero package with spoiler that will be on the car once I get it running.

I personally think that the very first 240z, the 1970 model is the nicest looking of all.

I'm not sure of the weight diff between then '70 vs others though.

I think that 1970 is the only year where the fan vent is in the rear trunk panel, and not on the side? I dont know why but that makes the car look nice.

engine wise your gonna not want to end up with flat-top carbs (i hear they suck total arse) and those came on some 73's if im not mistaken. the 72 (which is what i have) are the best of the 240's i think, well, the compression ratio was slightly lowered, but the weight was still low. the problem with anything over a 73 is that in states like california they arent exempt from emissions laws, which is a must-have if your crapping out the smog crud!

the flat top carbs suck. i took mine off and threw them away in favor of triple webbers. that made a huge difference. when my car was running the intake on those webbers made more noise than my 2 1/2" straight pipe exhaust. that cleared up all the smog crap and poor fuel delivery problems.
