Update on the Mongoose bodywork(LT1-240Z)

Well, I've spent over 18 months so far on getting the lines and panels perfect on the Z. I think I'm almost there. Just need to do some more work on the tail panel (already spent inexcess of 100 hours just on that) and block it all out ready for the paintbooth.

Here are some pics;

Shaved Cowl panel: Lots of work getting it straight again after the welding:

Rear 1/4 panel (pillar emblems, fuel hatch, bumper recess and marker lights shaved), and spoiler molded into hatch:

Headlight buckets shaved, market lights shaved:

Passenger door....completely shaved (door handle, lock and mirror holes)

Front end, with fiberglass bumper and custom mounts to make real close to fenders:

Drip rails (or lack thereof) and pillar emblem (or lack thereof :D ):

Tim,

That's exactly what I want to do with my front bumper. I'm going to get the 'glass front and rear bumpers from MSA. I want to mount them closer to the body, but haven't looked at how to do it yet. Can you explain how you mounted the front bumper close to the body?

Mat,

The side mounting pads (at the corner under the bucket) is slotted so you can push the bumper back (against the front of the bucket) as far as you want (within reason obviously). I didn't buy the MSA recommended bumper mounts for the front. I made some out of +- 1/8" think aluminum. I bolted them to the car, just under the hood hinges (there are two captive nuts about 3 inches apart front/back), and then bent the ally into an "S" shape, then a 90* bend to mate to the mounts on the front of the bumper.

I was actually debating on whether or not to section the bumper to make it even closer on the sides, but I figured the 1/4" or so wasn't worth the effort, and at some point I have to draw the line.....this project has snowballed enough (considering it started out as:"I'll just drop in my old truck motor and auto and go". Now it's bodywork, LT1/T56, rollcage, subframes, disks x4, fuel cell etc etc etc....)

If you want, I'll take a couple of snaps of the brackets...they're nothing fancy (about 15-20 mins of work with the jigsaw, drill and grinder). Just let me know.

Dave,

I was expecting a 'rude' comment on my completion time of 4th of 7th :malebitchslap: !! I won't make it!!

Matt,

Here you go. Sorry for the poor quality, but it's the best I could manage in a dark garage, holding up the hood with one hand. BTW, I used the side strip of cardboard froma pizza box to get the bends and lengths right.

Enjoy,

Tim

That is looking awesome man! I really like what you are doing with the rear end/tail lights, are you making custom lenses and lights for it? That would look sweet with some rows of hi intensity LED's in there :D

Thanks for the props!

I'm going to be using modified stock tailights, bolted in from the inside. Eventually I will make up a set of LEDs for it.

Looking good Tim. Get it done in time for next years Rio Vista meet. If Dave can make the haul so can you!

Wish I had the talent for bodywork like you. Then I wouldn't have to pay someone else to do it.

Picked a color yet?

Dan, this is my first bodywork project.....learning as I go....if I can do it, then anyone can....even you!! :D

Yes i have picked a color

Hey, do you mind if i try to copy your taillight design? I think i have fallen in love with the look of the totally flush rear end, the clean lines are sweet.

<edit> Well maybe not an EXACT copy, but you know ;)

See my first post on the time it has taken me, and I am not done yet with the rear panel. If you want to try, go for it, but remember, once you cut out the original panel, there's no turning back!! I felt sick to my stomach when i did it!!

I love that smooth rear end look too....did you do that with FG? or is it steel you welded up?

Everything replaced from bumper to hatch? or just the area where the taillights go?

Click on my www, there's pics there.

All sheetmetal. The only 'glass on the car is the front bumper, rear spoiler and airdam.
