ALUMINUM HEADS

I JUST INSTALLED A SET OF EDELBROCK RPM

HEADS ON MY Z AND THE INSTRUCTIONS CALLED FOR RUNNING THE Z AND AFTER COOLING THE ENGINE OVERNITE RETORKING THE HEADS.

WELL THAT SOUNDS SIMPLE EXCEPT TO DO THAT YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE EXHAUST SYSTEM BACK OFF NOT TO MENTION THE ROLLER ROCKERS TO GET TO THE HEAD BOLTS WHICH MEANS ALSO RE-ADJUSTING THE VALVES!!!! SOUNDS LIKE FUN WHAT A PAIN IN THE BUTT... ANYWAY AFTER COOLING DOWN OVERNITE I CHECKED THE ACCESSABLE BOLTS AND ALL WERE TIGHT. HAS ANYONE EVER DONE THIS AND IS THIS NECESSARY? ONES I COULD GET TO WERE STILL TIGHT.

Someone else on this site (Early in our beginnings...) had the same problem and wound up loosing a headgasket because of that. I'd strongly recommoned it. And Drax is correct. You must break the bolt loose, removing all torque, then retorque the bolt. It is a pain, but better do it once, then have to learn the hard way and then have to pull a head....or worse!

AIR, the necessity to retorque your heads is more a matter of which gasket you used than which heads your running. I haven't retorqued either buildup I've run, first went a couple years and most recent still going a few months along. (both with RPM heads)I used the GMPP head gaskets this time and Felpro perma torque last time (blue stripe). I'm just polling another list full of Lt1's etc to see what their experiences have been with retorquing.
